Sure, the concept was a hell of a thing, but everyone knew they were gonna knock it down a peg or two for production and for a final result I have to say i'm not dissappointed. I look forward to the R.

I'm also really encouraged that the XJ will not only be getting an XF-style makeover, but will be even more aggressive. Jag has neglected taking advantage of the XJ's higher price point to kick styling up a notch, if they set that right they'll really have a hot product line.

*** > Nose by far. The front end is sickening to me. Thought it was a buick at first :puke:

Jag can do better than this... come on now!

V10 8/25/07 07:44 PM

Sorry, it just doesn't blow me away, looks like a bit of an Audi, a bit of an Infinity and a bit of 5 other luxo cars. Just doesn't seem to break any ground. Jag is still playing catch up which will not help its sagging sales.

codeman94 8/25/07 08:25 PM

it doesn not look like a Jag.......and I think thats a problem

jsaylor 8/26/07 02:15 PM

Wow, Jaguar really doesn't get it. The problem wasn't and isn't that the cars look like modern renditions of older models, it's that they look like very boring modern renditions of older models. And then of course there is the real problem which is that the cars just aren't as good as those offered by the competition.

In fact, despite what Ford and Jaguar both claim the XF does nothing to indicate a new direction for Jaguar and arguably does the exact opposite. In the late ninties Jaguar felt that they could rely on outstanding styling, based on past models, to help their cars compete with dynamically superior models. Unfortunately for Jaguar the strategy was doomed from the outset since styling cannot carry the day by itself and, even worse, the styling redux wasn't as good as it should have been in the first place meaning that Jaguar had failed on both fronts.

With the new XF Jaguar is apparently hoping for much the same, that a model which is almost certainly dynamically inferior to offerings from Mercedes, Audi, and BMW will be able to compete base on polarizing style. And this in turn means that Jaguar is still following the same approach that they were with the S-type and XJ, they've simply decided that retro styling wasn't and isn't the way to accomplish it. So yet again we have Jaguar pursuing a strategy doomed to fail no matter how good the styling and, even worse, yet again depending upon styling which isn't nearly as good as they seem to think to help make up the difference.

Perhaps Jaguar and Ford will eventually discover that the base strategy is the problem and that the real solution is for Jaguar to produce superb drivers cars that also look fantastic, retro or otherwise.

Production car turned out horrible, why couldn't they leave the lights alone? Looks like they had Chrysler design the headlights, and the whole thing looks like a mish mash between a Hyundai and a Lexus GS.:shame::shame:

Interior is a joke as well..

Knight 8/27/07 08:20 AM

The tail...is so good.

But the front... wtf happened!?

I thought buick/chrysler when i saw it.

rhumb 8/27/07 01:08 PM

I pretty much agree with JSaylor's assessment. The XF is certainly a very nice looking car, but somewhat derivative and a touch generic from aspects too. They ditched the oh-so-sexy and distinctive Jaguar beltline, with its femine swoops and hips, for a very generic single arc-line from nose to tail. Very clean and modern, sure, but also very bland when it comes down to it.

It's profile sort of looks like a mid-model-run design freshening of the Lexus GS as done by Jaguar.

The tail is very nice, if very Aston Martin, but hey, if your going to resemble anything else, that's probably the best butts out there to emulate.

The nose, perhaps due to regulatory necessities, loses the deftness and finesse of the concept car ending up as, again, somewhat of a generic nose with but a seasoning of Jaguar.

The side vents, while perhaps a signature Jag stylistic effect at the moment, is quickly becoming cliched now that just about every other manufacturer is falling over themselves to slap some sort of vent on their fenders these days.

The interior seems nice, if, again, a touch generic and perhaps a bit awkward in some places, notably the hidden HIVAC vents -- an intersting concept that sadly looks like they were Sawzall'ed into the dash panel as their shapes are totally random in relation to the surrounding dash panel shapes and lines.

Anyhow, hopefully they've managed to tune in a bit more spirit and character into the engine and chassis, as that was, if not a weak point, not a strong point either against its primarily German competitors.

lots of intelligent discussion going on here....

kitty has whiskers.

unnoticedtrails 8/28/07 08:52 AM

i think its soooooo beautiful

Hollywood_North GT 8/29/07 02:11 AM

Everything about the car is fine, IMHO...except the front end. They should have stuck to the concept front end. Instead, they dumbed it down...and botched it up, as far as I'm concerned.

This will NOT be the car that saves Jaguar...not anymore. :shame:
