pcv system confusion
pcv system confusion
Hey everyone, a few weeks ago i just bought my first car (yes im only 15) and i absolutely love it. Its a black on black 1999 mustang gt 5speed 35th anniversary edition. So far me and my dad have had to replace the rear crank seal and oil pan gasket because it was leaking oil. My dad thought that the crankcase breather (pcv valve) was plugged or not working causing it to blow oil out of the seals. So we checked the pcv system and heres where the confusion starts. When i take the hose off of the pcv, it creates suction that is sucking air into the the valve cover and when i take the hose off of the air intake pipe (k&n fipk cai) theres no suction at all on the nipple even when revved up. Can anyone tell me whats going on?
Wait nevermind haha. I guess i wasnt checking the pcv valve, i found it and its all good. (Sorry im no pro at mechanics yet. But im still wondering what caused the oil to leak? Could it have been a crappy made silicone seal on the rear crank seal retainer? I dunno
Could have been the fact that the car is 14 years old and it just wore out but its best to do what your doing and learn the car rather than someone work on it for you. My suggestion is to get a Chilton or a manual from autozone or pep boys they have everything you can think of in those books you will learn a lot
This is the best thread I've seen in quite awhile. A young guy and his dad working on a Mustang. I would love to see pictures of your car and updates on the project as you go.
I was you 35 years ago. And a great car to start on as well.
My only advice is to study the Chilton's and maybe a manual on basic auto mechanics. And have fun with your Mustang.

Not even 100,000 miles. You have a very nice car there.
As you've already found, you will probably need to replace every thing made of rubber on that car. Once you do, though, you should have lots of problem-free miles before needing to do anything major to it.

That is a very nice car indeed! The interior has been very well taken care of from the looks of those pics. Like the above poster said though, keep an eye out for rubber parts and the like because they dry with age, become brittle and stuff like that. If you're like me and find a ride like that I like to go through stuff and get them back to like new condition. Sounds like you have a great Dad. Take good care of that car, and respect it's power. These cars are a lot of fun, and if you respect them, they will reward you with turning heads everywhere you go. Be cautious learning to drive it and always respect that power though, because a pony can buck and believe me when I tell you, you don't wanna learn what that is...I can say this though...it hurts. heh
I'm happy you have a nice car and a Dad that is helping you to work on it. That brings back good memories to me. I'm 46 now and my Dad passed recently, but one thing we used to do a lot was work on cars.
