HELP Car Won't Start

Hey guys, I'm praying someone can help me!

Thursday my car wouldn't start at work, got a push start and drove it home. Had the battery tested and it's fine. Spent the day today replacing the starter. After new starter the symptoms are exactly the same as before!

Here's the symptoms: turn car to on and everything turns on as it should, turn key to start and I get one distinct click from the starter and that's it. After replacing the starter and the battery being fine I'm at a complete loss, and quite pissed off to boot...

Have the cables tested. That's what my issue was. All I had to end up doing was putting the ends in some water/baking soda. So hopefully that's all it is for you too. I too had my battery checked, and replaced my starter.

Same thug happened to me, turned out I had a bad ground. Check and double check your wires, make sure they're super clean.

If you have not already solved your problem... The previous replys are the most likely culprit... The battery and connection may appear clean and have a good connection but I've seen it before... Pull your terminals off and clean them both and maybe even apply some battery terminal protection... Also just check the ground at frame/ engine block. Keep us posted!

Sorry for not getting back to you gents sooner! I started digging into the wiring tonight. Some of you may remember my battery kill switch from about a year ago. That's in the positive side of the wiring so that may also be a culprit. Anyways, I tried to reroute the wiring straight to the battery skipping the kill switch and proceeded to drain what was left of my battery. I'll be off to get a charger in the next couple days and then dive back in. Until then I'll probably just focus on cleaning up all the contact points I can as you've all suggested.

Thanks for the help so far and I'll keep you posted!

I had that exact problem. Turned out my grounds were corroded and I had a total of 3 copper strands connect to the negative cable. Took me a solid 2 weeks to figure out the problem.

Except from what I've looked up it sounds like I can't just replace the cable between the starter and the battery, I have to get the whole wiring harness. Is this true???

I honestly don't know about the mustang. I do know that Ford does that in the Edges so it's possible

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and take it to the dealership tomorrow. I'm tired of dealing with this BS and it's going on a road trip in January so I need to know it's actually fixed this time.

Maybe a relay in the fuse box? Same thing happened in my brother in laws explorer , there was a spare relay so I swapped it with the starter relay started right up.

How corroded are your connections to the battery? I had to get new ones

Wasn't a relay, went through all the relays the first time the problem happened.

Hardly at all... but you're very close to what the problem was.

I took it to a local shop instead of Ford. They tested the wires and fixed it for $20. The problem was that the lead on the negative cable is the lead for a positive terminal. Because of that, the slightest compromise in contact integrity meant a loss of ground. The shop put in some spacers so the bolt to tighten the lead can really be cinched down all the way around the battery post. So far so good...

Hi harristotle,

I recommend you speak to your Ford dealer about this and have it diagnosed. Your Service Manager will be in the best position to assist you with this. He can also look at any possible warranty your vehicle may still have. If you need further assistance, do not hesitate to PM me.
