I am needing some help. I bought a 96 cobra with 22k miles on it wrecked it is a hardtop, I am going to get a donor car and would like to get a convertible and transfer everything from the cobra to the convertible, does anyone know if the donor can be a v6 gt or cobra car. I am going to completely strip the donor buy both cobra bumpers and cobra hood have the car painted and put it back together with the cobra thanks .

Doesn't matter what donor car you get. The K-member and rear end from the cobra will bolt in to where the V6 K-member was.

I've done this before so I can give you a few pointers...
I had (have) a 96 Cobra (mystic) that I wrecked. I rebuilt the car with a donor body. The first deal I found was on a 96 GT Auto without PATS. 1. Auto vs manual - get manual if you can. The shifter hole is a little different, IIRC. Required some trimming. 2. Crossmember - There was a strange mid year change of cross member mounting locations that is related to the transmission tail shaft housing. Ford made two different versions for a while. GT and Cobra were different. At some point, they made a change and both were then the same. I had to cut the spot welded trans cross member brackets from the new body and install a Cobra bolt in crossmember. I also had to swap tail shafts. Check this out ahead of time and save some work. 3. Wiring - The donor car did not have PATS, my Cobra obviously did. The body harnesses are all different. The car wouldn't run without PATS. I had to transfer every harness from my wrecked Cobra to the new body (all the way to the tail lights). That's all I can think of now. Look for 96-98. Pre-96 had different spindles, different K-member, and a few other things, I think. Let me know if you have more questions. It's been a few years and that's all I can remember now. |
