I had homelink in my last couple cars. Didnt get it in the Stang, dont even know if Ford offers it.
I bought a homelink transmitter off ebay and started work installing it today. Normally in a Ford they go in the driver side sunvisor, our visors are to thin for the transmitter so Im installing it between the map lights. All you need to make it work is a + and - wire, both present for the lights.
Heres a pic, ready for paint, Im going to try a semi-flat paint, no clearcoat. I had to smooth the console when I molded in the transmitter so a repaint is a must. I dont want it to look out of place, so I may go through several finishes before I get it looking right.
Anyway, what do you think?

Cool idea! I've also had homelink with the last few cars, so I was a bit irritated it wasn't offerred as an option (actually, that list is kind of long, but I still love the car). Anyways, in the accessories catalog you can buy a replacement mirror with homelink built in. I got mine from KC, just haven't mustered up the kahoonas (nor found the time) to install it yet. Mirror itself looks easy, wiring a little less so.

Good idea!!!! Could you provide us/me some basic install guides. And when looking on Ebay what should I look for (I see that there are several types offered - rolling vs/non rolling). This appears to be a much cheaper option that a new mirror?
Another good mod offered by a TMS member!!!!!!!

Can't you get a new mirror with it incorperated?

Your right. It is a very good Idea and I was not trying to bring him down. I just thought he disgruntled about the lack of options. Guess I need to read the whole thing. Sorry once again.

First the cost was less than $50. The mirror is nearly $300. Both do the same job.
The homelink I bought was off a 98 Grand Cherokee, it looks very similar to the Ford unit.
My plan was to mount it inside the console with the bezel outside the console. The console plastic is to thick so the buttons would not engage once it was installed.
I cut a oval hole in the console, taped the bezel in position and used 2 part epoxy to glue it in. I used the kind in the 2 tubes that despense when you push the plunger, so it mixes right. It sets in 5 minutes.
The bezel had a crown in it, and I wanted it to blend in better so I sanded it flat until it was at the same level as the console. The green light used to be a small hole with the outline of a house on it. The plastic was very thin there so when I sanded through it, the hole got bigger. I just put a small square of green plastic over the hole before I installed the unit.
Once the console was smooth and the bezel blended in (280/400/1200 grit) I used a small amount of filler to join the seams. I sanded that with a block with the same grits of sandpaper until it was all smooth again.
I used three coats of Krylon spray primer filler. Sand 1200 grit between coats.
I didnt used any adhesion promoter, the plastic holds primer really well and it isnt a high wear or outside part so I figured it wasnt necessary.
I painted with Krylon semi-flat black.
I pretty pleased with the results.
I have more pics I will post this afternoon. I gotta run to the company x-mas party now.
