Beginner mods/upgrades

Hi all,

I'm a new Mustang owner (just bought a 2009 GT 3 weeks ago) and was hoping for some advice.

I hate to show up on a new forum asking for help in my first post, but I've never had a Mustang, or a car I didn't leave stock before and I can't seem to get a straight answer on my own.

I have the 4 gauge instrument cluster, but I would really like to have the 6 gauge cluster with the information center. So far I have found out the cost for the unit from Ford (about $300) and that the part number for the cluster is the same for the 2006 - 2009 models, but the guys at the dealership couldn't tell me whether or not the computer in my car would feed information to the new gauges, or if my current mileage would show up on new instruments.

I've been going through a lot of forum posts trying to figure this out and I still don't know if it can be done, and if it can, whether or not it has to be done by a dealer, or if I can do it myself.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Thanks,

Lug

i was going to do the same thing. from my understanding the dealership reports the mileage of the vehicle before the gauges are shipped and it is programmed into it. also, you must ship your gauges to them in return or you have to pay a core charge.

i believe there is a couple of things the dealership must do to install them, but it should only take a few minutes.

i received this information from my local dealership that seems very knowledgeable and helpful. i personally would maybe go to a different place if i were you.

it's a bit of a hassle, from what I've heard. you have to order the new one, there's alot of gov't mandated paperwork, to avoid mileage fraud, and then you have to have them install it. it's probably easier to just get aftermarket gauges and a pod

Does your car have TCS? If so, check to see if there is a harness and plug behind the button blanks on the left side of the center stack. If it is there you are in luck. You can order a cluster and switch to have the swap done. More info can be found in this thread.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I do have TCS, so I'll be pulling the console off later this week to verify if an additional block is attached to the loom. If it's there I will be calling one of the local dealerships for pricing as well.

Once I do that, I'll post the results.

Where can you buy the GT500 SVT instrument cluster from?

You would have to go through a dealer if you are looking to do a swap/upgrade. They can order one from their authorized cluster replacement center. See the link Deric provided above for a thread on the topic.
