Base Speakers Shaker 500
#1
I'll start by saying I hate the way the retro "can" door speakers look on the 500/1000 systems. I'm planing to order a base stereo with mine for the the clean look of the door speakers but I would like the features(disc changer) of the 500.
Does anyone know if the base head can simply be switched out for a 500 head? Any help is much appreciated.

And on of the very nice things about the JL Audio 8W3V2 upgrade I did was it made the ugly factory grill cover go away. The JL grill cover is MUCH nicer.
One other thing to keep in mind is that the speakers that come with the base system are not as good as the speakers that come with S500/S1000 system. If you plan up upgrading all the speakers anyway (good idea), it isn't a problem. If you plan on keeping the stock speakers, you might want to listen to one before you spend your money. Frankly, the speakers in my S500 do not meet my requirements. I don't even want to listen to the base system...
And, of course, I can't provide one tiny bit of information on the question you actually asked! The only problem I can think off would be the S500 head unit might expect to "see" the door sub amps (somehow). Generally, most head units are perfectly willing to send the signal out into the void, so it shouldn't be an issue.
Someone with the service manual DVDs can check and see if the wiring connectors are the same. I DO know that the S500/S1000 have one wiring diagram and the base system has another, but that does not mean the harness is any different.
