Ambient Lighting

I saw this picture for the 2008 ambient lighting option. Anyone look into this as a retrofit? I quite like how the cup holders are done.

Also, what is that switch in teh picture to the right of the cup holders?

Cheers

The switch is what operates the ambient lighting.

Looks like what you'll need is the newer center consol cover w/ switch. That one piece will take care of the rear lighting as well as the cup holders. The front lighting for the foot wells are separate lights tucked up under the lower dash. There is probably a whole bunch of wiring to get the front ones to work.

The actual lights look like a single high output led w/ a diffuser.

I found this picture of the button from another forum ... they affectionately call it "giving a whale a shower" from the look of the picture. They state that there will be 7 different colors to choose from for the ambient lighting.

I always thought the whole mycolor thing was a bit silly. And now they have this ricerific "ambient lighting package". Personally, I wish they'd spend time making the Mustang a better driver's car - maybe a factory sport/magnetic suspension or big brake kit. (Yeah, I know, FRPP)

That said, that's one of the nicer Mustang interiors I've seen. Classy, but still a bit mean looking. It's the whole tan-on-black upholstry and trim. I wonder if it's possible to do as a retrofit.

I'll be looking into this soon. Found this as well. Keep you posted.

Ambient Lighting – Taking the customizable dashboard lighting system first introduced on the 2005 Mustang to the next level, Ford’s newest LED ambient lighting system provides accent lighting inside the cupholders and in the front and rear foot wells. The driver or front seat passenger can choose from seven different colors – red, orange, blue, indigo, violet, green and yellow – simply by cycling through a dash-mounted switch. The trend towards more appealing interior lighting kicks off with the 2008 Ford Focus this fall. Ninety percent of consumers say they would be interested in this unique feature. New ambient lighting also will be added to the Ford Mustang, Fusion and Mercury Milan.

I have the My Color feature on my ride. I love it. I even used purple on occassion. Looks real nice and I would opt for the 08 fetaure as well. Why not?

Ok, I have actually seen this feature on a couple of Mustangs today. It is part of the Interior Upgrade Package now. There is an LED under each footwell, and an LED on either side of the base of the center console, as well as the cupholders. It actually is really neat. I couldn't get part numbers for everything, but here are the part numbers for the center console base and top portion.

8R3Z 63045A36 BC console base

8R3Z 63044090 BA console top

I don't know if the lights will all be there already, but the switch should be there. Here in Alberta, they don't give me good prices, but maybe KC can help.

Thanks Javier!

KC was saying ballpark $260 for the console top piece. He had an issue saying it was keyed in to the SJB / CAN bus as well... and a quick and simple retrofit may not be possible.

I would just wire to someplace else. I talked to KC and he agrees. Don't let that stop you. I had to be willing to get my passenger power seat to work, so this shouldn't be tough. Once parts are available, I will try this to go with illuminated door sills. (I love gadgets. At this rate, I will never get around to actually doing any performance mods!)

I am looking at the brochure for 2008, and it states:

Interior Upgrade Package - Includes 6 - gauge instrument cluster with MyColor illumination, Ambient Lighting; leather wrapped steering wheel with satin-aluminum spokes; satin-aluminum-finish instrument panel, air vents, door handles and scuff plates; message centre; and Dark Charcoal door-panel inserts
Mind you, it is a Canadian brochure, and I don't know if our cars are equipped differently than yours.

Javier, did you buy the console top yet?

I am tempted... but don't want to end up with a useless paperweight if it won't work.

KC's number is on speed dial, just waiting for the button to be pressed...

I haven't bought it yet, as I believe KC might be albe to get me a better price. My dealers here will charge $500+ cdn for teh top portion and $170 cdn for the bottom. On a different thread in Ford OEM Parts KC stated he could do it for $400 US total, so I will wait to see what he can do. This will be my next gadget for September.

As for it being a paper weight, KC feels it is totally doable - I don't see why not, as you can just tap into a power source for it.

I saw this feature in a Mustang the other day at the dealer, and it really is pretty neat - especially since you can change the colur to match the Mycolor.

I don'y know about the Canadian Brochure, but on the order guide it's listed as option code 95M. Is there a different order guide for Canada?

Interesting... I checked www.ford.ca where it does list teh ambient lighting as part of the IUP, and then I checked www.fordvehicles.com and saw that it is a separate option and not part of IUP. I guess Ford likes Canadians better

Maybe its our beer

I may be wrong but I think Ambient lighting requires the upgrade package. So technically it could be considered a subset of it but it is just another paid for option. Does the Canadian option tell if it is an additional cost?

How does the US upgrade package pricing look compared to the Canadian?

The IUP is $895 cdn, and it includes the ambient lighting. It is not an option on its own and is not an additional cost to the IUP. This is off Ford's Canadian website.
