If I smoke my lights with the VHT then clear coat with dupli color will it turn out and protect it pretty well?

If you want a long lasting clear coat, then you need to go to your local paint shop and get a can of there clear coat with hardner. Alot of paint shops call it 2k clear.

2k clear has no reducer in it so you willl need a to be in a dry 70-90 degree area to use it, and you only have 24hrs to use 2k as the hardner starts to harden the clear as soon as you activate it. You can color sand and buff the clear after 24hrs, if you want your clear to be as smooth as glass. You can use buffing compounds right away, but NO WAX FOR 20 days. All aftermarket paints and clears take about 20 days to release there gasses and fully cure. If you wax before the 20 days you can trap the gasses wich can cause solvent popping or the paint could cloud up or the paint can peel off in a year or 2.

Regualr clear spray clear coat has no hardner and has reducers in it wich makes it a weaker product. Regular clear is cheaper than 2k clear, but you get what you pay for. 2k has a much better shine and is easier to spray and color sand and buff, and when 2k hardens it is 5x stonger than regular clear.

It's pricey compared to regular rattle can clears. I pay 21.00 - 26.00 bucks for 2k down here. Where regular clear is between 6.00 - 10.00 bucks. I allways color sand and buff my paint projects. With that said the 2k is easier to use all the way around. With the time 2k saves me on color sand and buff time, 2k is the only way to go. 2k also has a better shine, and lasts alot longer than regular clear.

Vht and 2k is all I ever use on the lights. Anything else is a waist of time. If you color sand and buff the paint and 2k after 24 hrs your lights will have a better finich than the factory finish.

I'm trying to tint my fog lights so I can hide them behind the grille. Would this be a good route?

Yes. And if you want to save some time you don't have to color sand since these lights will be behind the grill, but that's up to you.

That's what I've been thinking. But I think I saw some of the spray on tint in the matte finish and it just looked so rough to me. A gloss would be better. Glad I read this thread. Thanks wades gt!

The roughness you are refering to could be how the VHT and clear were sprayed. It could have also been the quality of the clear or both.

2k clear is glossy right after you spray it. You only need to color sand and buff to get rid of dust particles and orange peal. But since you are mounting your fogs behind the grill no one will see those blemishes.

Do you mean after you spray 2k what is on the painted part has 24 hours or do you mean the spray can and the clear inside the can will start to harden?

I did your lights before I starting using 2k clear. I told you that we can redo your lights with the 2k any time....

I know, just givin ya a hard time man. lol. We need to wait till it cools down hopefully within the next 3 months or so.
