New rims,how big of a tire.
 
Just bought some new FRPP 18x8.5 chrome bullitts for my wifes car,getting some Nittos 555, 255/45 18s,has anybody put anything bigger than 255s on a rim this size.I know your thinking why this small but Im putting 345s on mine and she thinks it looks stupid.Will a 285/40/18 nitto fit.Took a couple of pic of the rims.Thanks for your input.

255 are the maximum recommended.
You can go bigger, but at your own risk.
No matter what happens (even a manufacturing flaw) they can blame it on the tire size if you go too big.
285/40 is way off according to recommendations.

I've seen 275's on an 8" wheel and they didn't bulge out, but that's as wide as I'd go on an 8.5" wheel. A 285 on a 9" wheel looks good too.

I lik ethe tire to stick out farther than the rim. I would go bigger than the the 255.
265 or 275 would look better imo

I have 295 on a 9 inch rim and love the look.

When you put a very wide tire on a narrow wheel, the shoulders of the tread area are pulled down because you are forcing the beads to be pulled in too far which in turn pulls down the tread shoulders.
Just because you can physically mount a tire up on a too-narrow rim and get it to hold air isn't a good enough reason to do so. Sidewall flexing and the related heat generation are increased by a too-narrow wheel fitment.
When mounting wide tires to narrow wheels, the bead will rotate, putting a lot more stress on the inside bead wires. The toe of the bead area may not even touch the rim any longer. This can lead to bead wire fatigue & failure.
Just because you do something and like it and feel comfortable with it, doesn't make it right.:dunno:
You can do anything you want, but be careful what you advise others to do.

just stating my opinion and will continue to do so. Can you give some examples where you have seen these types of setup fail?? I supose if I was doing a lot of over 100mph driving and high speed turns I would reconsider tire/rim width. There are plenty of people running 285 and 295 on 9" rims and for many miles with out any problems. Yes I know this doesn't make it 100% right but it surely doesn't make it 100% wrong. 265 on 8.5 rims is not a large stretch by any means

I don't feel like searching the internet for car wrecks.
I never said you can't do what you want.
What I state is only quotes from experts in the tire industry (you can ignore them if you prefer).
It is helpful to state the tire industry's years of research.
It is also useful to state the things that have been done for personal experimentation.
I just want people to know the difference before they make a choice for themselves.
Please don't think I am trying to dissuade you from stating your opinions and experience.

I have 275/40/18's on a 9" wide rim on my fronts and a 305/40/18 on a 10" wide rim on the rears... don't think I would go any bigger for safety reasons, and the look wouldn't be my style (I like the tire wider then the rim, but not obnoxiously so... unless it's a M/T slick).
