A few wheel/TPMS questions
 

First, I have an 07 and have to worry about TPMS, so if I buy take-offs from another 07, am I all set and will the TPMS just be recognized. Second, If I buy take-offs from an 05 or 06, all I have to do is buy straps that will fit nad use the sensors from my car? Third, how are the TPMS sensors recognized, I mean there are no wires attaching them to the car, so does anyone know how they work? TPMS = PITA

I recently upgraded my wheels and tires and after a lot of pondering on the issue, decided to go without TPMS. I am really glad I did because the TPMS warning message only comes on when you first start the car. Push the reset button and it's gone. The low tire pressure warning light comes on very briefly and disappears on it's own. A lot better than $400 for belts and sending units. BTW, I kept my OEM wheels and tires for cold weather use.

$400? I thought you can get straps for $25 each. And the lights really just go away on their own?

The straps are cheap enough, it's the sensors that are expensive. Tire Rack wants $400+ for straps and sensors installed. The warning lights easy to deal with -- less bothersome than the low fuel warning.

What about OEM take offs? :dunno:

They should have the straps on them already correct? I might be getting some take off 18 inch fan blade wheels, and I'd like them to work with the TPMS system.........:nice:

If you get 07 wheels with TMPS sensors all you have to do is take it by the dealer and have them program the car to recognize the new sensors. If you want to swap your original sensors all you have to do is get straps which you can get at Discount Tire for $10 each.

Just bought my 07 GT coupe yesterday and get the TPMS error when I start the car. Checked the tire pressures and all were about 5lbs high. Deflated them to 32 each and still get the error. The dealer installed these wheels (18s) and am guessing they either don't have the sensor bands installed or they haven't been relearned. Will bring this up again (salesman said was probably just an incorrect pressure issue) Tuesday when we go back to sign the paperwork and also take the upper strut mount TSB with me. The car is very noisy over bumps...

is it hard to remove the old sensors? Do they have to deflate the tires and take the tires off the wheels to get the sensors?

Do yourself a favor and purchase new straps elsewhere, like mustangdaren said. Ford charges an arm and a leg for them (I know this from personal experience :banghead: ) And yes, the sensors are inside the tire so they have to be deflated and removed from the rim first.
