I'm having a "helluva" time trying to decide which way to go.
18 inch rims or 20 inch rims.
The 18's fanblades are nice and I'm sure the wheel wells would support 255/55's in them . . . true? (overall diameter increase would be 2 inches).
But I love the 20's, but would probably have to go with 255/45 max (same diameter increase as the 18 set-up, 2 inches) . . . true?
Perfect world for me would be 20's with the 255/55's, but that would add 4 inches of overall diameter. Would that be too much? would it scrape on turns? 255/45's would drop the diameter by an inch, but might be too bumpy for me.
Ride comfort is important to me, so I was thinking that 255/45's on the 20's would be too bumpy.
What do you all think?
Any words of wisdom on this?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
TIA - Thanks in advance
HELP !!!!

PS - Thanks Ryan and 3D for the pics, they have definetly helped me narrow down my decion.

I went with 18's, 17's were fine but I wanted to get the same overall diameter as stock with fat 285's in back, the 18's were a good choice. The ride is not noticably more jarring than before.

Tom,
20s are for looks. performance is decreased. weight is up. cost is usually greater. btw, the 3D Carbon car you posted a pic of has 22s on them. even 3D Carbon says 22s are for looks. the ride is jarring.
i like the 18" fanblades. but in '06, a lot of mustangs will have them. for sure dealers will upgrd. ppl into them. koenig's "Beyond" rim looks nice too.
but a look i like and think fits in with the fast-backish look of the '05+, is the mach 1, 18"ers. don't know whos ride this is with the mach 1s, but i like it the best. not too many '05+s will have a mach 1 combination i'd think.

AFS Wheels was suppose to come out with 18x10.5" mach 1s. you could throw on some 315s out back on them and really have a head turner then.
if you go with 18s, go with a stock ride ht. tire. i haven't heard of any ride compaints yet with 17s nor 18s and a stock ht. of 27".
it's your call in the final analysis. it's great to solicit advice, but in the end, it's your ride. let your gut tell you what you like best. i'm sure your ride will look dynamite with a new set of sneakers.

this debate is strange because I read in this months MM & FF stated that the saleen with 20 rode great and that they thought the 20`s would give a rough ride but it didnt....could this be due to the racecraft suspension?

Harry,
Thanks for the tip, you brought up a good point . . . . allot of people will have the fanblades and for good reason too, the look great!
The Mach 1's you show, don't really "tickle" my fancy, although they look great with your color.
Yes, my mistake on the 3D rims . . . 22 not 20.
Thanks for your input.

np. fan blades are nice for sure. if you decide on them, check out 05stangkc (Kevin), he's the Factory Ford Parts guy for us TMS members. we are lucky to have him. he has some fantastic prices.

i do believe Kevin has fanblades in stock. but they are popular so his stock might be low.
sounds to me like the fanblades are what's right for you. post up pics of whatever wheels you decide on. fanblades would be a great choice. pony center caps, which kevin has, would look unique in them i'd imagine.

If you go with 20's plan on upgrading your suspension unless you don't mind a rough ride. I put 18's on my car just before lowering it and noticed a different in the ride. You definately feel the bumps more. The lower the profile on the tire the rougher the ride.

Since you dropped your sidewall ratio from 55 to 40 & 45 respectivly, wouldn't that be the cause of the "bumpier" ride?

Tom, I'd go 18's. They look very large as it is and you will save your back and wallet. 20's will be very expensive and the ride will be rough. Also performance will decrease and like adrenalin said, you might need to do some suspension mods to soften the ride.
Also, I'm not quite sure why you want to increase the tire diameter as it will raise the car off the ground?

I was wanting to "fill the fenderwells" alittle, while at the same time getting some new rims. Eventually, I'm going to lower it, but first wanted to get the rims and tires and then I can evaluate "how" much to lower it.
I'm thinking real hard on the 18 inch Fanblades, but still debating the tires.
Stock = 27.2 diameter
255/50-18 = 28.0
255/55-18 = 29.0
255/60-18 = 30.0
It will be one of these 3 sizes.

Since you're going with such big tires (and adjusting the speedo, I assume) you won't experience the same rough ride the rest of have. With this in mind, the roughness shouldn't be a factor in your choice.
IMO, 20's are too big on a Mustang. One question though. You didn't mention 19's. Seems like a nice comprimise if you're debating between 18's and 20's. Is that because you haven't seen any you like?

I went with 19s and a 245/45/19 tire. It did fill up the fenders pretty well, specially in the front. (I gotta lower the back) I didnt notice much of a decrease in ride quality though, and the diameter of the new set up for me is about half an inch over stock.

How much room do you have left "in the fender wells" ?
Would the fenders have accepted another inch in diameter? or 255's ?

Um, ya. I posted that in this thread. I put the lower profile on and did notice a difference, but not much. It wasn't until the car was lowered that I really felt the difference.
