Here's a question that I am a little embarased to ask, but why do they even put an air box in a sports car like this? Don't most people plan on removing it and replacing the filter assembly with a K&N or similar product?

The airbox is to keep dirt out of the engine! Unlike the k/n filer that lets oily film get on the mass air flow , which causes the check engine light to come on ! And since I am a service advisor by trade go ahead and put a K/N filter o at $100 per hour at our shop for diag for that light put them on and bring them in! Get past the hype K/n's blow, don't waste your money!
