Gear ratio

Does anyone know what the gear ration is on a stock 6er manual trans?

I believe it's 3.55 in the manual, 3.31 in the auto. A popular mod is posi-traction and 3.73 or 4.10 gears.

V6's only came with the 3.31:1 gears in both manual and auto.

3.55's are optional in the GT Manuals.

Pony Package should have had 3.55's as an option, but that would have really increased the price of that package as Ford would have had to use the 8" rear end from the GT.

As you mentioned, all V6's get a 3.31 ratio in a 7.5" rear end - no traction-lok. Since 2007, all GT's come standard with a 3.31 ratio and the 3.55's are optional only in the GT's with manual trans. All GT's come standard with traction-lok. One slight correction, though, Steve: All GT's get the 8.8" rear end, not 8". Ford hasn't used the 8" rear end in a couple of decades.

Steve, when are you gonna get an 8.8" traction-lok with some 4.10's for your Pony Pkg??? OK, maybe some 3.73's since you'll be road racing, not drag racing!

Doh, I forgot the ".8" You knew what I meant.

I'll get a 3.73 GT rear end for my Pony as soon as I strike it rich. - lol

Yeah, I know you meant 8.8". Just messin' with ya. I did have an 8" Ford rear end in my first Mustang waaaaay back when, though, and they were weak rear ends compared to the Ford 9" units of the day.

Don't make me call your wife and ask her for money for your Mustang mods! Let's see, 3.73 gears in an 8.8" traction-lok. Then a handheld tuner. Then an X-charger blower. et cetera. You let her buy a brand new F-450 last year, so I think it's your turn to upgrade. It only took me 7 years to talk my wife into letting me spend for a supercharger. Keep working on your wife and she'll find a way to free up some money for you (she could always sell one of her investment horses to invest in your Little Black Pony).

Steven,

Check out New Take-Off (Diversified Marketing) - they sell the GT rear axle assembly with 8.8/3.73 for $850. Their website even has a "how to" video for the installation... Seems to me this is the best way to get the gearing & Trac-Loc and you get the beefier 8.8 as a "bonus". You'd be spending about the same money to get Trac-Loc & gears installed.

How long will you need to save up for that? I'm hoping I can get one installed before I have to drive my V6 in the snow this winter.. spinning the one wheel is gonna SUCK!

Thanks guys great advise. I will have to see about this mod later, after the warranty is done.

Why wait? Installing a different gear and/or rear axle doesn't void your warranty. You just won't have warranty on the rear axle, which is fine as you probably could not break an 8.8" rear end anyway.

will the 8.8 need a different drive shaft from the stock 6er rear end.... or do the bolt up the same way?

The driveshaft doesn't need to be changed, however it's common to upgrade to an aluminum driveshaft because the stock one weighs over 40 lbs, while the aluminum ones are less than half that... the acceleration of all that weight wastes power, so switching driveshafts improves performance.

The the only part you need is a V6 adapter plate that mates up the GT axle to the V6 drive shaft. New take off has a version of the GT axle with the adapter already installed. So no worries.

This is the one you want to get... Clicky
