Your thoughts on the 5.0 Mustang article on the FRPP Drag pack

Just when I was about to talk myself out of spending just about 500 big ones for some gears (4.10's) I read the article where they basically said the 4.10's are the cornerstone of the mod.

They did not talk much about the shifter. I was kind of disappointed by the total HP gained with the whole deal. They must be using a really wimpy tune program. They add CAI, tune, and Headers and only get 19 more HP. heck that is a K & N filter mod. :shakehead:

I wonder why FRPP went with headers when most show a minimal gain in HP over dollars spent? (refering to the MM & FF shoot out for headers, cross pipe, and mufflers). Why not go with a decent tune (the CAI is not that bad), Pulleys and mufflers and skip the high performance oil filter.

I don't know I am just rambling here, but want your thoughts.

Well basically, its a drag pack..not a power pack.

Its for quarter mile times.
Gears and shifting are the main focuses of the pack.

The power pack is for more power and combine the 2 :) its even better

traffic142 5/14/06 01:39 PM

But is it worth the price there asking or can you do it better yourself since the long beat up warranty issue does not really matter if you put on FRPP or other aftermarket stuff.

Just wanted to kick start some discussion on this topic. Guess I am alone on that one.

I haven't read the article yet but I'm assuming MM & FF used headers because they are part of the Drag Pack, they come with it. I agree headers give little if any performance advantage. FRPP does not make any performance claim for their headers. They at least claim 5 HP for their X-pipe.

I thought the dyno runs after just the 4.11 gear change were interesting. It looked like an average 5-7 rwhp and torque lost, but the addition of the headers more than made it up. I wonder about how agressive the tune from is compared to other well-known tuners? Hopefully that would account for the lower than expected numbers after all the mods. Also, they mentioned that the tune took a while to load, because it flashed 3 computers rather than just one like other tuners do. I've never heard of this.

traffic142 5/15/06 09:19 AM

I have not heard of the multiple computer flash either. I am sure that one of our aftermarket folks (Steeda, JLT, Bama, C & L ) would have found it or mentioned it.

Also I was shocked by the loss of HP and Torque also. I am almost having second thoughts about the swap to 4.10's

Mustang18 5/15/06 10:38 AM

Yeah that was strange how it mentioned that it changed 3 parameters during the retune. Has anyone here installed one of these FR Packs?

traffic142 5/15/06 02:45 PM

I would like to hear from Doug at Bama on that one.

After much searching the site, I am still going with the 4.10's... Now should I spring for the chrome cover for a mear 22 dollars?

Kluski 5/15/06 06:25 PM

I was kinda dissapointed that gears lost a few HP, but they are so worth it. The spring it puts into the take off is very nice. I had some put in and would not change it. Heck, I went to a dyno shop after the gears, the tuner was able to squeeze 9 more rwhp after fiddling with the tune. So I figure it was an even trade for me.

HI there

Where can I see and read about this MM & FF shoot out for headers, cross pipe, and mufflers please as that is my next mod planned?

traffic142 5/16/06 01:42 PM

I tried the web sites and cannot find them posted. It was the months Sept., Oct, and Nov. I do not have a scanner or I would scan them for you.

Here is a brief readers digest of them.

Mufflers: I will give you the column max and column average of each in that order, and hp at 2500/3000 rpm:

Stock NO muffler Bassani FRPP Flowmaster Magnaflow JBA
290/232 290/227 293/227 293/224 292/225 290/222 290/219
115/153 130/158 132/159 132/158 134/161 132/159 123/158

Next high flow cats (some with x pipe) Same info as before max/average, 2600/3000/3500

Stock Mac Bassani Magna
293/237 295/241 295/240 294/239
132/161/202 139/160/203 136/158/204 137/160/202

Headers using Bassani x pipe and mufflers as base. same info as above same order

Stock FRPP MAC Bassani shorty JBA shorty
299/244 302/247 301/246 301/246 304/247
141/163/205 143/165/206 142/165/207 142/165/207 143/166/208

most of your max numbers varied from some at 4200 some at 5300. I included some basic numbers, most are steady through out. For me this article showed me that the best money is for mufflers. For the cost of headers and or x pipes/cats the gains are not worth the price for em. The mufflers give the best hp/torq at the low end and level out as your rpm climbs. For example, with the mufflers, by 4500 rpm the numbers are almost the same across the board at 265 hp.

I hope this helps. Best I can do with no scanner.

I could finally read the article. The headers did a lot better this time. Still single digit peak gains but torque really pick up down low. The CAI/tune did not add as much power as I thought they would. I still think the 4.10s are most of the improvement in E.T. I still cannot explain the 4.5 mph higher trap speed. An extra 20 hp should only be an extra 2 mph.

Hi m8

Its clear that mufflers give great improvement at lower RPM range. My question is however what are Mufflers? Are they what I already have as I have the Saleen performance centre exhaust, pic below:-
http://www.saleen.com/sc101ServicesU...102-B11504.jpg

Is that classed as a muffler? Is what Saleen have put on my car an improvement over the stock system do you think? If so then I guess I already have the best part of the exhaust system done then?

So from looking at that review are those all shorty headers they tested? Was any Long Header test done?

So Shorty Header and catted high flow mid pipes are good for a 10-15 RWHP gain then. So LT headers would give more that assuming that the review is based on shorty headers only?

Thanks Gibbo

traffic142 5/18/06 01:45 PM

NO long tube were tested, Long tube from some folks give about 13 to 15 more hp. NOt sure where you got the HP for the shorties and x pipes. Most only averaged 5 or so more hp, you cannot add the header and x pipe/cat deal. They were tested with a x pipe and mufflers. JDM has a set of Long tube headers and x pipe set ups for 1300.00 go to teamjdm.com and take a look.

Can anyone tell me why going to a new gear loses HP?
