I guess I've always had this problem, but now that I really notice it, it's starting to irritate me and I need you guys to help me figure out what it is.

I go about 70 down the highway, around 2250 RPMs, cruising with no gas. As soon as I apply a little gas, from the back of the car I hear this whiiring/whistling/whine type noise. As soon as I get to about 75 the noise goes away. Am I hearing things?

It's not my TB spacer, it's comming from the back of the car I'm pretty sure. Well now that I think about it it might be my TB spacer, I'll take it out to confirm tomorrow.

Is it the differential whine you guys are talking about? My car was built after supposedly it was fixed.

I get a whistle noise the minutes I hit 85+, and its only when I'm giving it gas. Its also sounds like its right under the engine/tranny.

Welcome to rearend noise/whine...thta's what it is...it will get louder as rearend breaks in. Ford has put dampers on new ones...they don't help. Also...if you are using LCA's..other than OEM...they will contribute to interior noise!

I had a slight whine decelerating from 65 to 60. Since I put the Flow Masters on the noise has gone away. I also added BMR Semi race LCA's. I can't hear them either, just the sound of power. :D

A little whine is nothing compared to my LCA and spring setup.

heh I think you're just covering up the noise with a louder exhaust

I'll probably put flowmasters on in the spring anyway. My neighbors will be used to a loud exhaust after a bunch of winter morning 6 am engine starts.

Im sure this is the axle/differential whine, as this is what I experiance expect from 40-80, where at 80 it actually turns into a high pitch sound simular to a mesquito buzzing in your ear, then it fades away(probaly just pitches out of human perception range)

My car has been in and out of the shop for the last 2 days. The shop did the following on each day.

1st day, Changed the oil ordered the axle whine damper kit
2nd day, Installed axle whine damper kit, determined it did little or nothing to fix the problem, and ordered ring and pinion replacement.

I guess if/when the pinion replacement doesn't fix the problem the next step up is a new axle, I guess we will see if the dealership can find a fix.

I hope it's the axle whine because I will con them into putting my labor under warranty for some 4.10s

Exactly what is a axle whine damper kit? Have never heard of this one.

That was a dumb answer. I know you can do better!!!

The axle dampeners, like most of the dampeners found on newer cars, are basically just weights. They change the harmonics of the component so the frequency of the vibration is shifted. Since noises are actually vibrations, the idea is to make the natural vibration occur at a different frequency that you won't hear or feel.

I have a similar noise but am not sure its the same. Mine happens at almost any time (not just on the highway at higher speeds). It happens when accelerating, decelerating and cruising. It does not happen when I apply the brake. It is louder when my foot is off the clutch (engaged/disengaged?). It sounds like a rasping/grinding (slight) or metal vibration coming from the rear (I think from the right?).

Does this sound like what you all are experiencing?

edit: BTW, I took it to the dealer for this noise today and they said it was "normal" and similar to other GTs on their lot. I also e-mailed them the rear whine TSB and they said it definitely was not that. :dunno:

I guess I'll have to have the wife drive with me in the trunk. :-D

I'm starting to understand why Ford and the rest of the Domestic automakers are loosing ground to the imports, the lack of build quality. I have had my GT for just a little over a month now, and I hear the whistling noise at the higher speed as noted, the transmission sounds like it has a Gremlin living in it, My driver side A-pillar cover already rattles, When going over speed bumps and bumpy ground the wheels have a thunk sound, and the mysterious noise that I posted about recently that sounds like detonation. I do love my Stang, but the 2003 Toyota 4-runner I traded in for my stang, and my Toyota Tacoma that I traded in for my 4-runner, had no noises whatsoever after 50,000 miles (Tacoma) and 35,000 miles (4-runner) Both of these cars were built on 4 wheel drive chassis with locking diffs and had no drivetrain noises. Even the interior still remained quiet, with monster stereo systems installed in both of them. Does this make me want my Mustang any less, heck NO! Having already owned 2 mustangs I know these are not luxury cars, but some of the quality control issues could be fixed. It was already well documented that the manual transmission has issues from the prev gen, and the interior is not put together well. I just hope the Cobra when it comes out has some of these issues resolved. But it is a $40K+ car built from a $20K car. Corvette owners are at least getting a $50K car built from a $50K car.

Thanks for starting this thread. I was having anxiety about it, then eventually I accepted it. I thought maybe its the way muscle cars or Mustangs are (I have never owned a Mustang and never driven a muscle car).

Generally mine seems like a drone. Pretty noticeable at 60-80. Sometimes I think it sounds like descriptions of "gear whine" and sometimes more of a drone. When I remove my foot from gas it stops.

I'm an automatic with no mods.
