Upper Strut Mount Recommendations 2005-2014 Mustang

Hello everyone. With the replacement of the front struts, it is recommend that the upper strut mounts are replaced as well. Steeda makes a heavy duty USM but I don't think that is what I need, or is it? Any suggestions?

If you don't have any front end noises coming from those bearings then reuse them. Mine have clunked from day one and I just had them replaced with GT500 bearings and a Steeda G-Trac bar to no avail. I would love to hear testimony from someone who had the clunking, then used the Steeda mounts and they cured it. Read this thread (specifically my post):

Get the Steeda HD Mounts and new nuts for your sway end links. GT500 strut mounts are the same CHIT as std GT...

Hmmm... my first post never made it here. Oh well.

The GT500 mounts are different - they have a different inner bushing (somehow) and have a different part number. Here's a pic of the bottom of the mount with both part numbers stamped on it, the green studs designating it a GT500 part.

You can see in these pics there is a difference:

Base/GT above and GT500 below:

I'm not debating the fact they are both pieces of crap - here's a video of the play evident in a brand new GT500 part:

That's ridiculous! You would think that there's a little more work going into that design. It would appear that a new Steeda mount might be the only worthy option.

the steeda mount IS the only option from the aftermarket. i jsut cant get myself to spend 300 on them when the stock oens are 14 bucks apiece

I've got the Steeda and no more popping ...

sorry to say but the only reason i am not lowering my car yet is because i am saving to buy springs, D-spec shocks/struts, and the steeda USM because i do not want to go pull the springs, then pull them again for struts then all of it again for the USM

Both GT and "GT500" mounts are same.

Part Number?

Just curious... What is the part number for the GT500 Strut Mount?

classj Apr 12, 2007 01:30 PM

The GT500 mounts carry a different number and my sources tell me that there are internal differences besides the stud legnth.

All I know is that I never had the popping. I did have a G-trac and strut brace on the car since pretty much new.

I just did the bilsteins and went to the gt500 mounts, car is even quieter between the shocks and the mounts. And that is with lowering too.

Ford reccomends changing the bearings whenever the strut is apart. Even if you just buy the normal ones, at 13 bucks each, it is cheap insurance.

BMR sells replacement strut mounts as well....It's listed in there 'Complete Kits' page.

The replacement BMR upper strut mount is the stock FORD mount.

I know because I ordered a set (which is in the OEM ford box with the ford sticker) but didn't end up using them.

I just thought it to be counterproductive to reinstall a poor quality, although new, strut mount when I knew it would cause problems down the road.

I chose to bite the bullet and get the Steeda HD upper strut mounts.

No noise since the install.

1 part from the factory strut mount is reused when mounting the steeda HD strut mounts.

Hope this helps

I am not so sure the demonstration turning the bearing by hand like in the video proves anything. Uninstalled the bearing is not loaded. When installed it is and it has more than 25% of the car weight on it. If it does not turn smoothly under load, then you have a problem. It will only completely unload when the wheel is off the ground, as a result of grabbing air off a bump or jacking the car up.

Usually, when strut bearings fail, they make a distinctive snapping clunk when turning the wheels left/right even when the car is not moving.

All I know is that between the new shocks and bearings, and springs, general suspension related noises have been cut by half and the handling and road manners are unbelievable.

am i blind? did steeda remove the USM from their site? i've already had mine replaced under warranty and now it's back. i doubt a dealer will touch me now that i have springs and shocks.

Steeda's are the bomb (I better not say that at an airport, I could get in trouble). he he

Seriously though, feels really solid and the noise, is defenitely gone. :)

+1 I love the Steeda mounts. A very high quality piece that's well engineered.
