FWIW, after owning 8 Stangs, most of which had K&N filters, they put out a good product. I also use K&N on my V-max motorcycle.

No tune will be required, as the 05s run rich from the factory, and in addition, the F/A difference with or without at K&N is negligible.

I would also encourage you to check out the threads on removal of the hydrocarbon canister, if you have not already done so.

Essentially, there are many mods which can be made to any internal combustion engine, in order to get it breathe more freely, since federal regulations require an engine to be restricted in order to meet emissions standards.

On motorcycles, "uncorking" is the name of the process of freeing up the breathing ability of the engine.

Personally, I think that is a great term and should be used for all vehicles. JMO, but take it from a guy who has owned 50+ vehicles.

The biggest problem with K&N filters is over applying the oil after cleaning and it getting on the Mass airflow meter element. It has caused problems on other vehicles from topics I've read. One domestic manufacturer has advised against using using them. It may be GM, but I don't remember the topic.

I have never had any problems with K&N filters, you also will never have to hear that annoying "Would you like to change your air filter?" when you take it in for service.

With my Jeeps, the FIPKs have had a more noticable effect as compared to the replacement filters.

My K&N filter will be in next week... Vehicle specific FIPK N/A @ this time... -don't feel like makin' one. :stubborn:

w/ stk filter:
13.6mpg (Pb foot)
20.2mpg (Sunday driver mode)

w/ K&N filter:
??.?mpg (Pb foot)
??.?mpg (Sunday driver mode)

will update in a week...

On my Cobra, I have put enough oil on the K&N that it drips off the filter for weeks. It has never gone pasted the filter at all and I have been all the way to cleaning the IMRC. NO sign of the oil penerating the filter.

It is good for 1,000,000 miles.

No tune will be necessary with the K&N CAI (when it comes out). I have already talked to them about this.

Yeah. I will be going with the K&N or the C&L intake. Not sure. Neither require a tune, which is bueno in my book.

K&N filters are junk. That oil can get into your MAF and screw up the sensor. Don't be suprised if you throw a code within a few months of use.
This is only a problem when they are overcoated. I clean mine every 2 months and spray on a lite coating of the oil. Never had a problem.

I recently bought one for the 04, and they now come (pre oiled) so you should not have any problems if you go light on the oil after you clean it... I do not know if it's just psychological, but I really did feel a bit of a difference after installing it.

The only way you get OIL on the maf is if when you are 'recharging' it you use too much.

I've had K&N products in all of my cars and never an issue.

Well I installed the K&N filter this morning and took her for a ride. You can notice the difference right away, it revs easier and feels quicker and breath better. Yea im happy with the improvement and it was very easy to install. It took all of 60 seconds, they make a very good product. Next im going for the CAI when it becomes available and a reflash on the computer. It should be exciting at the least.
I've located a place that can do the reflash about 35 miles from my home and im going to call and get the info.

OK, is the consensus that for a K&N air filter replacement you don't need to tune / flash your engine?

It took a while reading through this thread to get that. And the thread in the S197 Tech & Performance forum said if you don't plan to flash your cpu, don't install a K&N air filter. I'm not sure if all of the questions in the initial post at the start of this thread were answered.

I only plan to install a K&N air filter, nothing else, and NOT remove the HC trap but leave it in place.

Can I "plug & play" the K&N air filter and not look back?

Or do I need a tune / reflash?

If you need a tune / flash, where do you get it? The Dealer? Will a custom engine shop have the info on this new engine? How much $$$ ?

Please clarify. Thanks.

All three of my mustangs have had K&N
96GT just the filter
98Cobravert Fipkt2 the whole thing
03GT just the filter

Never a problem! great performance
GREAT SOUND!
The only thing you may have to do extra is if you get the cold air induction, they recommend changing your mass air flow sensor secondary to the large increase in airflow.

Well, I ordered the K&N filter this afternoon; will be in by next Friday. $41.33 including tax.

I am only talking about installing the K&N air filter, not removing the HC trap or making any other mods at this time.

The Service Advisor at my Ford Dealership said that by installing the K&N air filter:

1. There would be no warranty problems with Ford.

2. No need for a tune / re-flash.

3. Just be careful not to put too much lubricating oil on the filter, as that could get into the MAF sensor and mess it up.

The K&N comes lubricated, so I won't even buy the $10 cleaning kit for a while (or I'll let my son buy it for his F-150).

If anyone has any problems with any of the above, please advise me quickly before I pick up the filter and install it. Thanks.

There is a great article on the HC trap and more (including dyno runs) in the April issue of 5.0 Mustang.
