Hey Guys,

sorry if this has come up before, but not having owned a Mustang before:
what kind of gas will the '05 GT run on? Does it need premium? Or is regular ok? What about the Cobra (current and upcoming)? Gas prices being what they are here in L.A., these are important questions to me. Regular gas is about $2.40 right now. Yikes!

99-04 GTs = 87 Octane
03-04 Cobra = 91 Octane (94 in Canada)

EDIT: I would assume the same trend will follow in to the 05s

Not only does it run on 87, it's going to get pretty good mileage out of a gallon, especially considering the performance.

Yes, I agree.

Decent mileage for the HP on that Octane...

I think its VERY sweet.

How can you complain about 300hp on 87

The thing you need to remember about modern cars, when they tell you premium it is a recommendation, not an absolute necessity. If you look in the owners manual it will tell you it will run on regular, but you won't have the full performance of the engine. The computer can handle the engine running on regular.

I'm not sure what you mean by that in regards to the 05. The press so far has all said that the GT is designed to run on regular. In that case, there should be no advantage to running premium.

 Let me sum up: Just use what your owners manual says to. Period. No more, no less.

You are correct, I was just adding some info that some people don't know when they are looking at cars and people tell them they have to use premium. They don't HAVE to, but it is recommended.

It all depends on how your car is running on said gas. I still have a stock tune on my cobra, but I'm having to cut my gas with racing fuel to prevent her from detonating because of the poor quality premium on the west coast.

New 05GT runs 87unleaded "but" on the 8Vs you should run 92- 93 so get no knocks in the motor .

Anything above and beyond what it SHOULD run at...is a waste.
You can throw it in if you want...but you really are throwing away your cash.

If you have computer modifications that require higher octane, then obviously you should use it.

FROM the FACTORY: the 05 GT 3v is an 87 Octane engine.

It runs on 87 octane, dont have to use anything above unless you have mods that need it.

To put it bluntly...
The engine is designed/tuned to run on the recommended '87 octane' unleaded gasoline.
Putting in a higher octane gasoline, will do nothing more than rob your wallet of the extra 10 cents a litre (canadian premium is 10Cents more than 87 regular)
It is not designed/tuned to make use of the higher 89/91/92/94 etc octane gasolines.

When and if you mod your car and modify the way the engine timing/supercharging what have you....
It may (more times than not) require you to run a richer octane.

But doing it because its 'better' is a totally useless argument.
If you want to do it...great...but its a total placebo..

I agree whole heartedly with you, however, my car was detonating above 3k on premium, so, since I didn't want to retard timing, I had to upgrade. (I did check all the usual suspects and no love, so it's the gas and heat )

Assuming the 05 doesn't have the same problems that plagued many current GT's, regarding detonation, then you should only run 87.
