power steering pump problems

my power steering pump died during the header install. no pressure on the lines at the rack, no pressure on the line on the pump itself. anyone heard of this or know anything?

pump was repalced today and still no power steering. lines are good. no pinches, no collapses, no abnormal bends, nothing. there is an abnormal amount of play in the steering system, way too much just to be slack from not having power steering. with the car in the air, and the steering wheel locked, i can move the front tires by hand a good 2-2.5" by hand before it hits the steering wheel lock. since the pump wasn't moving fluid before, and the new one is now, i must have had a bad pump AND a bad rack. pretty odd timing for both to go at the same time. the pump is a fluke i'm sure, but the rack must have been damaged in the accident considering the tie rod was destroyed. the gear on the inside must have been broken already, but not enough to stop the functioning of the rack, and finally broke when we removed the steering shaft for the header install

thank god its covered under insurance. best price i could find is 350 with a 150 core.
