K&N Installation

How hard is it to install the K&N CAI? I haven't really ever installed anything like this before on my car. How long does it take and what tools will I need?

When I installed the MAC CAI all I needed was a flathead screwdriver and a few wrenches. What you should ask your K&N dealer is if there is a computer program that comes with the CAI to remap the onboard computer otherwise you might find that the check engine light will come on. The check engine light came on on my mustang because there was so much air coming into the fuel system that the fuel mixture was actually running lean. According to the experts a lean fuel mixture is not good when you run the car at high speeds (over 100 mph). As such with the MAC system, I took it out until I can afford the computer program froms Bren's Speed. The cost is $397.00 in American funds or for us in the land of the Canadian Peso about $547.00 exchange rate and duty. I did however replace the standard Ford filter with the same type from K&N.
I did it with a friend. Between the two of us, we have zero automotive experience...=)
It took us a few hours. It's pretty easy. You need a socket wrench set with metric measurments, a screw driver, forgot what else. Just basic tools.

You need flathead screwdriver and a metric socket and wrench set. the only special tool you need is a torx wrench to get the mass air meter out and the kit comes with one.
The install is easy and I did it at my lunch break.

Poldrv is correct about the necessity to reflash the PCM. I've been shopping around a lot lately, and I think RPMOutlet has about the best deal that I have come accross for a K&N CAI and Tuner Kit.
They offer the K&N CAI with a Diablosport Predator Tuner for $489.95 with free shipping. You will pay around $400 for the tuner by itself, so a combo kit like this will save you a lot of money. They claim to dyno test everything they sale, and their claim is 28.3 HP and 23.1 Torque added with this kit, and that seems about right compared to what others on the board have reported with a CAI & Tune.

Scroll down to Option B to see the K&N & Predator deal.
Hope this helps you!

From my homepage, click on the "Pictures" icon, and I have about a dozen pictures or so of the car there. Enjoy!
I got the K&N AirCharger - the install was easy, they provide good instructions - . I got it because it did not require a reflash. Ran it for 2500 miles before going to a tune (BamaChips). Never had a CEL.

Car looks exactly like mine
As others stated its a very easy install, even with no car experience. A reflash/tune is not required. I ran mine for about 1000 miles without one then gave in and got the bamachips tune which I am very happy with just for the throttle response difference and shift adjustments on the auto, so having the k&n wasn't the main reason I went with a tune.
Although the no tune required was the main reason I went with the K&N, since right now I don't plan on many engine mods if I need to take it in for service I just flash back to stock and don't have to worry about putting the stock airbox back on or getting the CE light.
