I plan on going to the track for my first time next Thursday...
I know a stock GT Mustang can break into the 13s Will the track personnel know this as well, and deny me running eventhough it will be my first time at the track? I really don't want to spend $50 or more on a helmet for one run... I read in either Motor Trend or Road & Track that the stock Mustang GT had a 1/4 time of 13.0 secs. I ran in the 14's in all 4 runs. I came back home and looked at the magazine again and realized I was looking at the wrong column. Their speed for the stock GT in the 1/4 was 13.7 secs. I went back the next week after installing my brenspeed tune and got my 1/4 time down to 13.88. Maybe with skill, luck, and this thread you will run in the 13's to begin with. There is a learning curve, some pick it up quicker than others. I did not know about this thread before I went for the 1st time! Good Luck!, and post your slip when you get back from the tracK. |

He he he. Yeah, I mean I know I shouldn't really compare my time to that of an unknown, yet surely far superior driver that works for a major automotive publication. :banghead: It was just *something* to go on. :metal: I'll keep working on my time although I'm going to let her rest a little while. And thanks for all of the helpful tips in this thread. I've actually read almost the entire thing! |
Hey guys what would be really helpful is if we could start and new sticky with what parts or equipment are being used for drag racing.
I'm still trying to find some skinny front wheels that don’t cost both legs. And what is the best value slick being used with what wheels... Of course there are a lot of variables here but it would give everyone a starting point. What to look for and why?. Or maybe Mike we can just add to your thread? |
Brent's got a fairly good deal on take-off rims and ET Streets on his site.
http://www.brenspeed.com/mustang_2005/wheels.html Although you may get them a little bit cheaper buying separate. I got my wheels from newtakeoff.com for $100 a piece and the ET Streets for like $170 each from ls1speed.com before Brent started selling them. |
Thanks for the tip on the rims, and tires Alex.
Anyone have a good tip on what to run on the fronts? |

Last year, I decided to find out what it would take to run standard Weld 15x3.5 wheels. So I bought a couple of these from Summit: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...D%2D90%2D54340. To make it work, I had to use 11/16" spacers to clear the calipers. The spacers made the studs too short, so I needed to install longer wheel studs. Of course, no one made 3" long 1/2-20 studs to fit the knurl size of our front hubs, so I had to have the hubs drilled out to accept larger studs: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku. Finally, I added these lugnuts to fit the wheels: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...LL%2DL5120%2D0. http://www.2005stang.com/gallery/alb...17Mar07007.jpg http://www.2005stang.com/gallery/alb...8650sh%7E0.jpg |
Don,
Wow!!! thanks for sharing this! (nothing like jumping through hoops huh).... I hope getting the rear wheels was not as much work. |
The rears are discontinued Weld XPs... they aren't made anymore, so you have to find them "used" and that is nearly impossible. Mine are 15x9, w/5.5" bs. Longer studs are also needed, but my Moser axles had 3" studs on them already.

So shifting at redline doesnt mean that your are going to get your fastest time?

OK going to the drags this coming Friday night for their Test and Tune. Let me see if I got things right:
Pump the front tires to 35/40lbs (??) Deflate the rears to 25/30lbs (??) Take all the crap out of the car to save weight. Reload 93 Brenspeed tune and up the shift points to 6200 (I run 5800 on the street) Should I mess with the fan temp set points??? A couple of questions, think of going with half a tank of gas or less. There is a BP station right down from the track that sells 110 racing gas. Would it help me to get 2 gallons of this to put in my tank?? Also I have D-specs, what is a good set point for the fronts and backs? My helmet is a SA95 will they let me run with this helmet?? Thanks :jester: |

Thanks :jester: Deflate the rears to 25/30lbs (??) - 25lbs Take all the crap out of the car to save weight. - yes Reload 93 Brenspeed tune and up the shift points to 6200 (I run 5800 on the street) - I have a shift light now, but if I ran 6200 I'd bump it and there goes the race. I'd put it at 6800 and shift whenever you want, this way you don' t run the chance of bumping the limiter and wasting a run. Should I mess with the fan temp set points??? - No D-Specs - 6 upfront and in the rear I've played with 5 on the passenger side and 5.5 on the drivers side. Also gone with 4 passenger and 4.5 driver. It's going to depend on the track, temps, tires, etc. I'll let someone else chime in on the gas, but with your tune I'd probably just run the 93. |
110 is probably leaded, so if you have cats, don't do it. And even if you don't have cats, it won't help performance at all, but it might provide a little bit of insurance again detonation.

I'm going tonight I think. First time in 4 years. Last time I went it was with a 8.70's 1/4 mile Mustang. This will be a little different!! I think I'll raise the rev limit to 6,800, probably shift around 6,400?? Should be interesting, since I've never tried staging launching in a manual.

Steve, heading over to gateway?

Yep, went last night and did the $20 test and tune. I made 4 runs and it was a lot of fun. First run was ok. Second one was bad, spun hard in 1st and REAL hard in 2nd. 3rd one got better, and 4th one was the best, probably because of the cooler air. I was happy I broke into the 13's on the last run, the air was not too good all night, and the track was a little greasy.
60', 1/8, 1/4, mph 1) 2.22, 9.22, 14.11, 102.01 2) 2.28, 9.50, 14.37, 102.15 3) 2.17, 9.18, 14.04, 102.52 4) 2.19, 9.09, 13.91, 103.05 |
Let me know next time you go, I should have my car back this week, would love to run it.

My wife's employer has reserve Milan Dragway for the day and I am planning on running my Magnacharged 05 Auto. with a Lidio custom tune for the added 9# boost pulley. Everything else is stock.except for 275-40 17 M/T ET Street Radials. I hope I can turn mid 12s. Last year I turned 13.5 with a C&L CAI and a Brenspeed 93 octane tune and stock Pirelles. Should I disconnect my front swaybar and if so what is the easiest way to do that since I have to drive about 50 mi. to the track and will have minimal tools. Other then the tips mentioned in the first few posts is there anything else I need to do. All advice appreciated.
