GT John Oct 15, 2006 07:06 AM

Well on Tues 10/10 I went to the drags to run the GT. The last time I ran a car was back in 1968 when I had my 1966 GTO.

I ran the car at full body weight (full tank of gas and spare tire in the trunk). I wanted to find out what the car would do just the way I drive it everyday.

So here it is:
Best out of 4 passes
60' - 2.128
1/8 - 8.727
1/4 - 13.491 @ 102.47 (launch 2000 rpm)

I really do beleive that my GT will go quicker without the full tank of gas, spare tire. And add some drag tires. The 12's are not that hard to get too.

I came away from the evening feeling pretty darn good. I didnt buy the car to drag race it. Just wanted to see how fast my work car is.

Sure was fun though...........just like the ole days. :metal:

Since posting this earlier, I have found out that the Overdrive, not allowing the car to shift into 5th, should have been off. (lit up where the tach is). :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

My GT shifted into 5th in the 1/4 mile. I did have the TC=off (lit up)

I think that might be the quickest stock ET yet. Scan a time slip and enter it in!!

Redfire 05Gt Oct 15, 2006 06:20 PM

I wouldn't consider his car to be stock!

Stoenr Oct 15, 2006 10:24 PM

ahh, yeah I was assuming from the way he posted with full weight and what not.

I have a very similar story to yours, GT John.

On Saturday 10/14 I to my '05 GT to CJ Pony Parts' Drag Days at Beaver Springs Dragway. The last time I ran a car was back in 1979 when I had my 1968 Charger R/T.

My GT was also run in full street trim. Full tank of gas, spare tire in the trunk, standard 17" wheels and tires, etc. Like you, I wanted to find out what my car would do just I as drive it everyday.

We made four passes with our GT. I say we, because the third and fourth passes were made with two people in the car, just as there usually are when we drive it on the street.

To top things off, conditions at the track were not the best for getting good ET's. We were driving into a headwind of something about 10 to 20 mph, and the temperature never got out of the low 50s.

The first pass was the best of the bunch. Ironically, it was the only one made with the traction control on.

60" - 2.169
1/8 - 8.854
1/4 - 13.688 @ 102.52

Second pass, traction control off, driver only:

60" - 2.273
1/8 - 8.995
1/4 - 13.843 @ 102.11

Third pass, traction control off, driver and passenger:

60' - 2.254
1/8 - 9.163
1/4 - 14.096 @ 100.48

Fourth pass, traction control off, driver and passenger:

60' - 2.330
1/8 - 9.255
1/4 - 14.192 @ 100.23

I know these times don't look all that great, especially when you read my signature and see what my GT is equipped with. But mine was the fastest of the '05 and '06 GTs in the field that day. None of the others were able to break out of the mid-fourteens that day. That's why I figure the track conditions that day were holding times down somewhat.

I also figure my GT could go faster with the same changes - half tank of gas, no spare tire, slicks. And, my SCT XCal2 tune is currently on the 89 octane setting. Just switching back to the 93 tune and putting the good stuff back in the tank would help!

Overall, I was pleased with how my GT did that day. I'm looking forward to going back to the track next spring for CJ's next Drag Days event.

I don't think anyone is posting stock times anymore on the 1/4 mile time sticky.

Is there anyone out there still running stock GTs at the track? I thought for sure someone would have posted a better time than 13.678 by now for a stock GT. That one has stayed on top since May 2006.

Ok, so I'm tooting my own horn a little...Feel free to show me up, I can't race stock anymore...

i`m going sunday to english town nj. will post results when i get back..first time at the track hope i can launch the car good .my only concern is the smokey burn out .never really tried to do a standing burnout so i am sure the fact that i am not going to be able to heat the tires well enough will hurt my times.....that and the air temp is going to be a cool 45-55 ......

TxTungstenGT Nov 7, 2006 12:45 AM

I will be taking mine this weekend, just to see what it will do. I am completely stock, unless you consider a K&N Filter out of stock. I will try to compete. Will be my first trip down the 1/4 in this one.

Factory Rev Limiter is 6250. My stock dyno run showed 260-265 RWHP from about 5000 to the limiter. If you are lifting off the gas when shifting, I'd suggest running it up over 6100. If you are powershifting, try 6000.

I would strongly suggest attempting a couple of powershifts at 5000 or so if you have never done it before, and watch your RPM to see how much it "jumps" during the shift. I lift on the 1/2 shift and powershift the 2/3. Haven't had to go for 4th yet.

This was some great info for a NOOBE like me!

rfedd Feb 27, 2007 10:32 PM

Your shift point is determined by your power curve, and you launch RPM is determined by your torque curve. Launch 3-500 RPM below peak torque, and shift 2-300 RPM after peak power. No reason to shift at high RPM if the power curve is already heading south. You will of course need to find those points on a dyno. One other minor point...you do NOT break a lazer beam when you leave. The beam accross the track is blocked when your front wheels roll in. When the back of your front tires unblock the beam, is when the clock starts.

Exactly. And that's why shallow staging will decrease your ET, but increase your reaction time. Deep staging will do the opposite.

Ok. So here's a stupid question. How do I do a burn out on a 5 speed w/out line locks and to keep it from taking off going forward on me...

Enfynet Apr 24, 2007 12:21 PM

^ Tricky foot work and brakes. :nice:

Will there be any information on drag suspension? These cars launch pretty well stock, wondering how much I can improve the weight transfer on launch. thanks :)

That's really what it is. I do a quick spin to move forward out of the water, then dump the clutch at 3000 rpm and quickly move my left foot off the clutch and onto the brake, modulating the gas to get the tires hot. Watch your rpms to make sure you don't exceed redline, lean over and watch your right hand mirror to gauge the burnout. I usually count 8-10 seconds off and then let off the gas and depress the clutch, then move up to the lights.

It sounds hard, but it really isn't.

Some tracks like the one I go to dont really enforce the Helmet rule, unless you are obviously fast.

My 1st track day with the stang will be tomorrow, I was just refreshing my brain with this nice little sticky.

I plan on going to the track for my first time next Thursday...

I know a stock GT Mustang can break into the 13s Will the track personnel know this as well, and deny me running eventhough it will be my first time at the track? I really don't want to spend $50 or more on a helmet for one run...

Stoenr Jun 8, 2007 11:14 PM

Yes. Because you will want to go faster once you've went to the track :nice:

Where can you get a SA 2005 helmet for $50?:dunno:
Better yet, what is the least expensive SA 2005 anyone can find?
I am a little shy on money this year, but I would like to go to the track.
