I know several guys who had gone to the AODE and C4, but off the top of my head, no 4R70W's. Going to a 5R55S will be probably the easiest, mainly because all the hardparts and electronics are already out there.

Going to the 5r55s is definitely not the way to go if you want an easy swap. I've done 2 auto to manny tranny swaps on the new stangs. In fact, mine was the first '05-up stang ever for that swap. I've looked over the wiring diagram manual extensively and have helped several guys with the leg work for a manny to c4 and manny to 4r70w swap.

Basicly, to swap to a c4 or 4r70w it's pretty simple. You can re-use your pcm because these trannies are ''dumb'' so to speak and the pcm will think you are still running a manual. You'll need a major portion of the wiring harness if you want the stock 5r55s auto tranny along with many other odds and ends, but unlike the c4 or 4r70w you can re-use your original driveshaft and crossmember.

Send a PM to member 169stang. He has done the manual to auto swap on his '05 with a PA C4. The pedal assy swap is another non issue. You can remove the brake/clutch pedal assy and install the new one in a matter of minutes. As far as the electrical part of a swap to a C4 or 4r70w goes....it's very minimal, that's for sure.

BTW, Peter Delpino had the auto 5r55s swapped to a 4r70w auto. Piece of cake.

I know this area very well and I really wouldn't want to go from a manual to the stock 5r55s. It's for sure a major pain.

I'm not sure why anyone would go to a 4R70W when a 5R55S had much more closely spaced gears (less RPM drop between gears will give better acceleration) and stonger internal parts. A C4 has only 3 gears, no over drive. Useless for a street car, ancient technology. Good for drag racing only. Maybe that's your intention but in a street car going to something will fewer foreword speeds is just going backwards.
Just my 2 cents.

If I ever totally break my 5R55S, the 4R70W would be at the top of my list. Durability for drag racing and having a transbrake would be my primary concern, along with OD for street use.

That is the main reason for me looking into a 4r70w, ease of the swap.

Is there an aftermarket controller for the 4r70w?

Peter Delpino hit 9's with his 4r70w. The 5r55s trannys just kept breaking on him and never left the 10's. They were modified 5r55s trannys too. He didn't do the work himself so I don't know all of the details, but I do know it's not a bad job because it just ain't.

Yeah, I've heard the 5speed 5R55S isn't exactly the best tranny for handling higher power.
This was coming from aftermarket tuners.

I guess that depends on what you define as "higher power"... There are a bunch of 5R55S cars deep into the 11s and some in the 10s. But, if you're looking for low 10s or high 9s, then yea, I'd agree that a 4R70W, AODE or C$ swap out would be a better direction.

I'd agree with that because the ratios on the 5r55s are great. I just wouldn't want the task of going from a manny to the 5r55s.

to install a C4, you simply bolt up the components (i.e. flexplate, bellhousing, trans, driveshaft) and let er rip. NO wiring, tuning needed. In order to run a 4r70w, I'm pretty sure you need a Baumanator shift controller. Quite a bit of wiring but is supposed to be pretty nice once you have it all together and tuned. Not sure if you can run one w/o it. It may be just to make the 4r70w fully automatic.

You two hooking up would definitely get the costs down. The only difficulty with going from a manual to automatic is having to get the computer reflashed by Ford to accomodate for the auto. Anthony05GT could more than likely set you up with that.

It's easy to switch from auto to manny and IMO mannys are not overated.

'05 and '06 cars can have the PCM re-engineered. '07 cars cannot be re-engineered, you'll need to buy a pcm for the swap.

Manual to Auto

Hi all... To wake up this thread again. My daughter just wrecked totaled her 07 GT Auto. Box Truck ran a stop light. She is bruised up pretty bad. She is heartbroken about her car. She is 18 so just needing something practical to finish senior year and then College. I am seeing a lot of good deals on 05 to 09 s. But they are 5-speed. I am fairly well mechanically inclined although not a mechanic. I do have a barn out back with a lift where I do a lot of my own maintenance. I have a Mustang also. I have removed a transmission or two in the past and reinstalled. So... If I was to buy a 5 speed 05 to 09... could I simply remove it and install the automatic out of the wrecked car? Do I need to remove the wiring harness from the wrecked car?

Just teach her how to drive the stick! Problem solved!

I don't actually say that to joke, I really mean it, 'cause it's gonna be a bit of 'fun' to do the swap. You will need the automatic harness, computer, transmission, and shifter mechanism complete. And probably a few tweaks. And maybe a trip to a dealer to make it programmed to your keys... and this... and that...

It's just easier to get her figured out on a stick shift, and who knows... she may just be a natural!

Otherwise, I'm not touchin' them because you aren't going to save any money and the hassle of doing it is just... yeah no. I'd keep lookin' for an automagic instead of tryin' to do the swap.

For what this is worth... I have a 5 speed '06 GT. And if I lost the ability to perform the clutch with my left leg for whatever reason? I'm stickin' a suicide shifter from a motorcycle in the car to do the clutch:

All I would have to do is hopefully keep the use of my right hand...

She wouldn't be the same with the auto, and I like to shift my own gears, so there's that...
