Three Kings: Ferrari 458 vs. F40 vs. Enzo

http://www.racer.com/three-kings-fer...rticle/193613/

hey sounded perfect, individually, each one producing a uniquely beautiful noise that echoed throughout the otherwise empty forest. But collectively they sounded like some kind of wild monster, howling its way through the woods, occasionally spitting flames, even, at anyone who got too close. Never before had the normally subdued confines of our test track sounded like they did on that day.

Then again, when a 458 Italia meets an F40 and an Enzo on straight-through pipes, the noise is going to be pretty spectacular, no matter what piece of road you choose to compare them on. Because these are surely the cars that define the way in which most of the world thinks about modern Ferraris. Between them they represent the evolution of the supercar itself: the F40 at one end of the timescale, the new 458 Italia at the other.

Of the trio, however, it's the Enzo that takes your breath away most obviously. It looks huge beside the others, for one thing, but it also seems the most contemporary in many ways, despite being almost 10 years older than the 458.

sorry but the Enzo for me has always been a styling disaster. F40 a bit better but the Italia is just stunning.

nice article...would love to drive all 3 of them

its a tie between the f40 and the 458. The enzo is still the king of the hill in my mind tho. The f40 has stood up to time very well whcih the other two might not.

Lalo 1/5/11 07:44 PM

yea, the enzo is just plain ugly. from every angle you see it, it seems to be missing something or have to much... i don't know how else to explain it.
the f40 i have always loved!
the 458 is just a great car, but i personally have to go with the f40 if i was to own one.

I may be old and nostalgic, but F40 was and is still pure awesomeness! Still my favorite and still pure beauty and beast all in one.

Love the F40 for it's just raw beastly nature and the 458 for it's innovations/technical prowess (disregard the fires)

The 288 GTO is my favorite of all time.

The F40 is to Ferraris as the 2000 Cobra R is to Mustangs.

God help me I do love them so.

Magnum only wishes he would have had a GTO. That car is still impressive by today's standards. 400hp out of a 2.8L V8, and the first production car in the world to top 300 km/h with a top speed of 189 mph. And that was in 1984. And with only 272 produced, its much rarer than the F-40 (that was based off of it), and the Enzo as well.

Magnum drove a 308 I think. Basically the easiest Ferrari other than the Mondial to afford. My brother's best friend's father in high school in 1980 had 2 of them. Both grey and both identical. The son drove a 924, also the cheapest of Porsches in the day.

At least Magnum wasn't like Crockett from Miami Vice driving around a Vette with a Ferrari Daytona Spyder replica body over it. :shame:

Till he renegotiated at least and got the white Testa Rossa.

:poke: . . . . one of the white Testa's was a Pantera with Ferrari skin! :jester:

Regardless . . . still one of my favorite shows! At least the first 3 season!

I like the 599:chirp:

The 1962-64 GTO is my favorite Ferrari. THE GTO in my book. Pontiac just ripped the name off.
Among the F40, Enzo, and 458 Italia - I admit to liking the 458 Italia though the F40 is my sentimental favorite. Since there are insanely wealthy individuals out there making "updated versions" of past Ferraris, how about stuffing a twin turbo charged 458's V8 and the other Italia goodies into a F40 body? F40 Evoluzione II/LM II?

Hawaii 5.0 1/6/11 09:37 PM

Id have to say the 599 GTO is an absolute monster is my favorite. The 458 is simply gorgeous, full of technical prowess and is the definition of ferrari for this time period. Enzo is a tribute to the end of one of THE most well known people in ferrarri history. Tye f40 marked the end of the "affordable supercar" era and is still dominating after so many years which is insane. As for yall sayin the enzo is a styling disaster, i would say its an acquired taste. Strange at first but it grows on you. If i had to choose one though it would have to be either a race red or a midnight black 458 italia. Maybe even somethin like the grabber blue on the mustangs. All three of those colors would be sexy!

jsaylor 1/7/11 08:32 AM

The 458 is easily the best looking Ferrari since the 355 and 456 went out of production. Most Ferrari models built since have been styling disasters and the Enzo is their king. Still, the 458 isn't perfect, in general the lines are pretty good but there is something kind of generic about it (for example, nobody is ever going to mistake a 355 or 456 for anything but a Ferrari, you could have initially told me that the 458 was the new McClaren and I would have no reason not to believe you other than the tail lights)

So, out of these three, if it's truly a toy I'm picking the F40 wins hands down. Still gorgeous, still stupid fast, and still pure Ferrari. No electr nannies to dillute what comes through the steering wheel and the seat, just as Enzo intended. In spirit the F40 reminds me a bit of a mid engined, 80's era take on what the 427 Cobra brought to the table. Brute force and great styling in a lightweight package.

The 458 would win if the car was intended to be a daily ride.
