SCCA Time Trials

Hey Y'all -- has anyone tried the new SCCA Time Trials yet?

It sounds like a pretty good bridge between pure non-competitive track days, and true wheel-to-wheel racing . . . as I understand it; they are two day events, with the first day being "practice" like a normal track day, and the second day being "time trials" where they put people into competitive classes, time their laps, and post the results.

I think I am going to try one during the independence day holiday weekend, here in Thompson, Connecticut. I haven't been on track for two years so this seems like a good way to back to it; though the pressure of the stopwatch might not be a good thing.

Unfortunately my Steeda heavy duty strut mounts count as "adjustable camber plates" and put me into the same class with 2011+ Mustangs, Corvettes and other more capable cars. I guess that is a good thing because I won't be attempting to "win" my class . . . ;-)

Thanks I saved that link for future reference.

I have not run with SCCA, but NASA runs similar time trials. NASA starts everyone in HPDE 1 and you have to work your way through HPDE 4, before you are eligible to compete in the time trials.

I worked as a corner worker earlier this year at Gateway during an SCCA event. It was a good way to get a substantial discount on my membership dues and would have been fun too if it hadn't been so unseasonably cold and windy. They ran a time trial class in addition to the regular wheel to wheel road racers. Some of them were really hustling, especially one guy from a driving school in Colorado. I want to do a few autocross events this year so I decided to renew my SCCA membership.

I signed up for the Time Trials at Thompson Speedway (Connecticut) this Friday and Saturday, so I'll report back soon.

This will be my first time back on the track for two years so I hope I don't get myself in trouble with the "red mist" when trying to beat the clock! LOL

Awesome Bert! Glad to see you get back to it. Have fun and stay safe. 2 years is a long time so remember to work your way up in speed, and warm up the tires, the brakes and especially the brain!
