Need help removing Rust on Muffler tips

I have tried turtle wax chrome polish/rush remover. I have even used the green pad from the kitchen. The rust does not come off. My current exhaust is the frpp stingers. Would CLR remove the rust or will that remove my chrome also?

Well since they are not chrome, that would explain why the polish didn't work. I find the tips really hard to keep clean as well. I did use a dremel with a sanding disc to sand mine back down. Then used a small polishing wheel and a blue polishing compound to brighten the metal up again.

The muffler's tips aren't chrome? I didn't know that. Would CLR do the trick?

I had to use rubbing compound on mine then Zanioed them real good. Mine were just showing light signs of rust.

If they are not chrome, what are they????

OK I'm just throwing this out there, I could be way off base and for all I know it might eat the finish. I 've used this on angle iron before but never on polished steel. Naval Jelly? It's a phosphoric acid based product. Check the label of course and maybe someone else knows better, but **** this stuff makes rust disappear.

I'd try some 000 steel wool followed by some 0000 steel wool, then some chrome polish to remove the last bit of steel wool scratches, then top it off with some sort of a sealer........the only problem is the mufflers get so hot that waxing or using Zaino on them is basically useless after the first time you drive it.

If the problem persists I guess you could have them removed and take them to a good chrome shop and have them re-chromed.

Well not sure if we are all talking about the same mufflers. I have the FRPP stinger (Borla) style. As far as I know, the tips are just polished stainless steel and not chrome. I could be wrong, but since I sanded mine down, if they were chrome the chrome would have chipped off which did not happen in my case.

Try NevrDull. Worked great on my tarnished GT tips. Previous owner didn't do anything to them, and they look pretty great now! Also leaves a nice sheen on them, which can be wiped off if you would rather.

It'll take a little elbow grease, but the solvents in it do take on rust pretty well. Give it a try.

You live in California... how the heck did you get the T304SS to rust like that?

Just sand off the rust and it will be fine, but you will need a VERY FINE polishing compound to do this or else it will make the tips look beat up.

FYI you can sand off the rust on T409 and T304 SS. All it will do is remove the FeO (Ferrous Oxide, aka rust) and reveal shiny SS. I recommend painting all exhaust metal that you can't really see, leaving the tips exposed since they're shiny and look great. I have read multiple reports of the GTA hangers rusting off, even though the GTAs are made of T409SS just like the stock mufflers.

Im not an expert when it comes to rust. I thought it was rust, but it could be the stain cause by the exhaust. What do you use to sand the area with?

I would use a very fine metal polish, or even a rubbing compound used for clearcoated paint finishes. test it out on an inconspicuous spot first to see if it would dull the shine. Do you have any pics of this "rust"?

The tips should not be chromed steel, but rather polished T304 SS.

Never heard of them having rust on before... are you sure it is rust? Try with any alcoholic liquid. It should work.

Another test is to use a magnet. Most high quality T304 SS won't have enough ferrous metal to have a magnet stick. Chromed steel and T409SS will be attracted to a magnet.
