Unfortunatly, Ford has been relying on truck and SUV sales for its profits. One vehicle can't keep them afloat. Sad but true. And with gas at 3 bucks+ per gallon, it's anybody's guess where any car company is headed, but right now it doesn't look good.

I beg to differ. For several years now automotive journalists in all the major mags have been writing articles like this one. I think he's dead on right. And hypocrite? I don't think so and I have no idea where you came up with that word. Detroit has done it to itself again.
Europeans have been paying incredibly high prices for gas for many years, mostly due to taxes, and look at the small fuel efficient cars they have come up with. In my several trips to France I never saw a pickup truck of any kind except for commercial uses, and I remember seeing only one SUV. Same thing in Germany.
They got the picture a long time and we are only now just seeing it here. And sadly, it's pretty bleak.

The roads in Europe are very different than here in the US. They often have many very tight streets in the city. Again, with the high tax rate on Euro gasoline they pay through the nose for their fuel. The guy in the article writes from the tree hugger mentality where you work the articl backwards prsenting only points that support your desired outcome (WAY too much of that in the media). I don't use all the space of my vehicle every waking moment, so I guess I don't qualify as someone who NEEDS one based on the article, but I do utilize the hauling capacity often and I do feel my family is much safer in an SUV if in an accident.
