Tire Size on AMR 18" Rims vs Stock

2014 GT- I am currently looking to upgrade my wheels to the AMR 18". My car currently has just about brand new continental's which are the stock 235/50/18. The stock rims size is a 18x8. I'm looking to go with the AMR 18x8 and the website recommends going with a 255/45/18 tire size. What is the reason for this? I would assume I could directly swap the tires from the stock rims to the new ones since they are both 18x8. Any advice would be great!

Thanks

yes the tires that fit on a wheel correctly, depend on the width of the wheel (and also the diameter) . . . and the same tires should fit fine on a different wheel of the same width

You can look up any tire you are interested in on Tire Rack; find the specific size you are considering; look at the "specs" tab, and it will tell you the recommended rim width range -- you want your wheels to be within that range. If the tire needs a wider rim, look up a narrower tire; if the tire needs a narrower rim, look up a wider tire. You can check the overall diameter at the same time, and you want the overall diameter to be roughly the same as your original tires, within about 1/2" or so.

Without looking it up for you; I'm pretty sure that 255 is borderline "too wide" for an 8" wide wheel. The 235/50-18 should fit fine; you can look up your exact tires to confirm that.

But . . . since you are buying new wheels . . . this would be a good time to consider spending that money on wider wheels instead. 8" is pretty darn narrow for a car with over 400 HP. I would look at 9" as an absolute minimum, 10" is much better, especially in the back. Yes to take advantage of this, you would need to buy new tires. I'd be looking at 285 in the back, on a 10" wheel.
