These things aren't cop detectors. They don't prevent tickets, they don't give you a free pass to speed and I certainly do not trust any company that would 'reimburse' for any tickets. It just isn't true.

All these devices do is detect radar presence around the vehicle at certain bands/ranges known to be used by LEO. That's it - a simple countermeasure and added layer of information. Up to the driver to use the tool wisely.

Exactly. I've always told people unfamiliar with their operation: It gives you the ability to see and hear radar (and laser). That's it.

If you are someone who claims to have never speeded....good for you, I have some doubt as to veracity of that claim. Most of us have looked down and found that we were going faster than we had realized. Sometimes that realization comes after seeing red flashing lights in the background.

I don't have a radar detector and have only had one speeding ticket in the last 20 years, but I occasionally ramp it up when it appears safe to do so. I think that most of us do. Speed laws are designed to be safe, but what is safe for a car with high performance tires, brembo brakes and a well balanced chassis is quite different from a '72 Chrysler Newport with cheapie tires, drum brakes (no antilock) and original shocks and springs. For which car was this speed deemed safe???

I'm not advocating running around like a madman endangering others and running at ridiculous and unsafe speeds on public roads. But, let's be realistic, "Don't speed???" really?? Never??? never 28 in a 25 zone??? Wow, that's discipline. If you can do it, I salute you. Now could you move over, I'm going to drop a gear or two and pass...quickly.
I learned a great deal in this thread and will be purchasing a 9500 thanks to the feedback here. However. I wanted to say the above response was one of the best posts I've read in a long time lol

I agree completely. The best protection is situational awareness. I think Valentine1 even uses that in their advertisements, and it's good advice. I run my radar detector all the time, even when I'm driving my Focus. When you're not intending to speed, it's still easy to creep over the limit if you're not paying attention. The detector helps you stay aware that smoky is around and can help keep your speed in check. When you consciously intend to speed when conditions are safe and you're not endangering other drivers or pedestrians, the detector can really save your bacon as long as you know how to read it. Let others take the risk and run behind a "rabbit." Never be the one out front that takes the first instant on or laser hit. Drive smoothly and don't swerve in and out of lanes, and just generally pay attention. If you do that, you can have some fun and still be ticket free.

Here here! All radar detectors do is augment your existing toolset (you know, your eyes and ears) when keeping up situational awareness. Just gotta be aware and research all the scenarios.

Do these things work? How much time do you spend thinking coulda/woulda/shoulda?

I think it's a bit unfortunate that there is technology to monitor and punish speeding, but other things drivers do that IMO is far worse, there is no technological solution. Maybe there should be.

I think I'm a better driver doing 80 in a 70, and PAYING ATTENTION, than the person doing 70 in a 70, and has NO CLUE what's going on around them. I've seen the F up countless times. The difference in 10 MPH pales in comparison to their utter lack of driving skills. You've all seen it I'm sure - the texters, on-the-phone and cannot multitask, the "enforcers", who strictly obey all laws regardless of whether it's causing traffic problems. The lane changers who think that as long as their vehicle fits, it's okay to lane change whenever they wish. Tailgating should be a felony. So should heading immediately to the left lane of the freeway and camping there, at or below the posted speed limit, until the needed exit.

One example many of you have probably seen: that clown doing 70/70, with 17 cars stuck behind them that would like to go at least a bit faster. They see the cop in the median measuring speed - about 45 feet before they get there. So they *POUNCE* on the brakes as if they're going too fast. In a chain reaction, everyone behind them is compelled to also jam on their brakes, and with the reaction time delays, several vehicles back is an unhappy scene. Most of the time, everyone gets by okay and doesn't crash, but one patch of ice, one tailgater . . and the guy in front of them now has a smashed car and all, while the idiot up front just putzes away. They're good, not technically breaking any laws (that they'll likely get stopped for, obstructing traffic is WAY under-enforced). Yet, speeders get nabbed frequently. I wish the cops would see this, the dramatic drop in speed, left lane, WAY too late and frequently ticket these people who obviously are not paying attention far enough ahead, and cannot seem to respond appropriately to conditions.

One of the biggest problems is there is a wide variety of opinions about how driving should be done, and too many people trying to enforce their way of thinking onto others sharing the same road(s). Or worse, just being discourteous if not downright combative. I'm sure I **** some other people off in the way I drive, though that is seldom my goal. It's getting worse and worse where I drive - a turn signal for lane change now means "block them!" rather than the courteous display of intentions. Properly turn into a driveway from the right lane of a 4 lane road is too often met by a 20 second horn honk and middle finger. And too many people just seem they MUST go faster than you, especially if the are behind you. It doesn't matter, do 61 in a 45 and they NEED to go 62, and the guy behind them needs to go 63, etc. Until they're past you, then the inevitable cut in front of you, and slow down. Particularly if they SEE you enter that road they're already on, regardless of how close you were when you entered. Someone ALWAYS "cut them off", and they now MUST get past you to prove it.

Yeah yeah I'm venting here, but bringing some of it to the subject of this thread, I really like having a radar/laser detector for the situational awareness. It's handy knowing at all times if either is active, for all types of scenarios on traffic apart from just outright speeding for speeding's sake. Sometimes it is very helpful to move it a bit faster than it might look to a cop at that moment.

I'll go ahead and say that the Valentine V-1 is most likely out of the question.
Rural Highways = Valentine 1 or Escort Redline
City/Urban Driving = Escort 9500ix
Mix of Both = Escort 9500ix or Redline with Live
Best of both Worlds = Beltronics STiR+

You're right, that el cheapo cobra you've had for the past 4 years is better suited as an expensive paper weight than an effective radar detector. In other words, if you wanna play you gotta pay. There's a reason why Escort/Beltronics and Valentine are favorites with the radar detector enthusiasts. Cobra simply does not offer the detection range that the high end models of these brands do.

First of all, the type of detector you buy should depend on where you drive and what type of threats exits. If you live and drive in mostly rural areas, then the Valentine 1 ($400) or Escort Redline ($500) would be your best bet. The Valentine 1 is a proven detector with excellent range only 2nd to the Redline. It also is the only detector with a rear facing antenna and directional arrows to offer full situational awareness. Although the Redline has slightly more range with its dual horn antenna, it is not as quick to alert to Instant-On (I/O) radar as the Valentine 1. In other words, the Redline may not alert if an officer is really quick when using the Instant-On feature on his/her radar. I/O shots of under a half as second are basically a crap shoot with the Redline. The same goes for the 9500 series detectors and other Escort detectors. Although, I wouldn't worry too much about this as most I/O shots last for a duration of 1 second, give or take. Furthermore, while these detectors offer the best range, they are quite chatty in urban/city areas to the point that they are useless.

If you drive in mostly urban/city areas, then you're detector choice should be the Escort 9500ix, HANDS DOWN! GPS filtering of known falses and great range to boot; although, not as extreme as the V1 or Redline. Another option for you would be the Redline with Live add-on. Escort Live is basically a bluetooth device built into your detector's power cord that syncs up with your smart phone. Live has features to block out falses using your smart phone as a GPS device; although, as of now there are still a few bugs to be worked out being that is so new. Another great thing about Live is that you can communicate with other Live users to warn each other about speed traps. Basically, if another Live user passes by a officer running Ka band radar, that spot will be marked for a duration of time as to warn other Live users driving into this area. Also, Live is available for the 9500ix and most other high-end Escort detectors.

If you want the best of the best go with the Beltronics STiR+. Same antenna as found in the Escort Redline (Escort and Beltronics are basically the same company). Although, this is built-in unit and cost $1300 not counting installation. It also has the same built-in GPS feature that the 9500ix has and can be made quicker than the Valentine 1 against Instant-On radar when programmed correctly. So basically the best of both and all worlds.

For what it's worth, I drive with a Valentine 1. It may not have all the fancy features that some of the Escort detectors have, but it gives me all the information I NEED without all the fluff and, not to mention, having directional arrows is simply something I cannot live without. Oh and FWIW, Mike Valentine is one of the founders of Escort but was bought out by his partner back in the 80s. He also believes that your detector should never go obsolete. That's why the basic shape and information displayed on the V1 hasn't changed much since the introduction of the 1st Valentine 1 model back in the early 90s. Only changes have been software related and tweaks to the antenna's design in which your detector could be send in to Valentine to be upgraded. That's his business model and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Great post! The fact is that catching speeders is like picking the lowest hanging fruit. Unfortunately, not only is it easy to catch speeders, it is also usually one of the most expensive common traffic tickets and thus brings in more revenue for police departments. Around here, last time I got caught rolling trough a stop sign it cost me $90. Last speeding ticket I got 4 years ago cost me $195.

Oh, and don't get me started about tailgaters and left-lane hogs. I hate those ****** with a passion.
