My front license plate mount turned out just as I had expected
My plates came in yesterday and the dealer's service department mounted the rear plate for me. I spoke to a Washington State Patrol Trooper about how I wanted to mount my front plate and he felt there should not be a problem.
I made two bends at the top and two at the bottom and cut two pieces of 1 1/4" wide aluminum to just shy of 4" long. I cut another piece 10" long. I purchased stainless bolts, lock washers, and nuts and drilled holes in the aluminum strap as needed. The plate with its bends and short pieces of aluminum strap mounted looks like so.
I had to remove the piece of cowling that is attached to the underside of the front end to be able to reach behind the lower grill. With the plate in place I slipped the long piece of aluminum strap over the bolts and secured it, then remounted the cowling. The finished product is shown below.
I am completely satisfied with the appearance and the plate is very securely mounted.

It's really slick, but I had a couple of reservations about it. The first was damage from concrete curbs in parking lots or road debris. The other was the reliability of the mechanism in the Western Washington climate. We get enough mud and gunk on the roads that I would be concerned the mechanism would get 'gummed up' and that would be the end of it. My solution is a permanent mount that I never have to mess with until they issue me a new plate.

Here is MA, we need the front plate to be mounted and they also will not inspect your car without it. Pretty gay, but at the link is what I will be ordering very soon. One of the better ones, easy and looks good. Once the inspection is over, I take the bracket off and have no plate on the front again until the following year.
