Spring here is the time of year you want to get outside but can't because of rain, snow or cold - with intermittent sun.
So I've been surfing hunting knives & fine cutlery for like 3 days now. Probably viewed well over a thousand knives. lol Some of my old ones I got in the 70's are worth a few bucks. Heck you should see what they get for straight razors I got as a kid in the 60's for a few dollars! lol
Anyway, I'm more of a stainless guy - 440C or 420HC - when it comes to blade steel. And I appreciate great cutlery in the kitchen (wannabe chef from all those years as a coffee man in restaurant kitchens).
Even tracked down the artist that did the "Brown Bear Walking" Scrimshaw knife I got as a gift at my 2nd and final marriage (that lasted a whole 6 months).
I proudly use this knife at dinner for slicing freshly seared flesh hot off the barbie.
I learned 'surgical steel' for knife blades is typically 440C stainless from Seki, Japan (although most of the 400's can be used for surgical steel). And that the older Japanese knives were stamped 'rostfrei' for their rust free stainless. Also learned 'Soligen steel' for knife blades is typically a 440 stainless from Soligen Germany. Learned the mix and hardening process for my top line German cutlery - Henckels Soligen blades (have to be careful of what grade Henckels you are getting these days because of outsourcing - X50CrMoV15+ice hardened Friodur). Amazing what you can learn from ebay listings/pics and then go from there.
So that long intro was for me to exclaim how struck I am with Damascus blades! They say even with the 'folds' they're just as good of an edge as my stainless blades - between RC 57-60 depending, but look at the patterns in the steel!! Awesome craftsmanship!!!
And for just $472 you can have this 6.5" blade Damascus steel Santuko knife for your kitchen:
Guess my old man was right. I'd always scrimp by because I have a champagne taste on a beer budget!
Now where'd I put that can of Busch?

So I'm definitely having V8 withdrawals now. I haven't been kicked back in a seat in nearing 2 months!

Thats cool stuff Charlie, i love knives myself, have a few $50-60 range kitchen knives, one only ever used to slice sushi and high end meats (where i dont have to put it through gristle etc). the other gets a bit more heavy work done to it. in my hunting backpack, i leave the house with no less than one fixed blade on my belt (custom made that my dad did), my kershaw pocket, adn 3 other sheathed blades in my pack.
Always loved hte look of damascus, just never could afford it!

Right! I'm not that familiar with it so its kind of new and fascinating. Some ebay sellers sell kits kind of reasonable for you to finish yourself. But you're hoping their reputation and feedback = accuracy for blade quality.

Were having some NASTY lightning right now, and its not even storming. Just completely at random. I hate it, it scares the **** out of me. I was on the porch a few minutes ago and it struck right behind the house. The flash and the crash of thunder were almost simultaneous. It blinded me for a second and was deafening. I think I may have pooped a little.

I find it really helps to run around outside with tinfoil on my shlong when I'm afraid like that. Also helps if you hold a golf club in one hand and an umbrella in the other.
