parts bin ("Kanban" in lean manufacturing lingo) for the correct tail-light must have been empty so they pulled one from the other bin ...

Yep It Happens! Don't Want To Stop The Line For One Thing!
Back in The Day When Cars Had Metal Side Trim I Have Seen Cars With Totally Different Trim One Side To the Other! Back When They Had PUNCH CARDS For The Car Build. Found A Card One Time in My 71 Ltd Coupe!
Some Interesting Cars Could Be Built Back in the Day of Options Galore! Just a Punch Here & There!
