My favorite Mustang has always been the 1st generation 67-68 Fastback.. As far as I'm concerned, the retro styling of the 2005-09 S197 Mustang resembles the 1st generation 65-70 models more than any other IMHO..

I'm right there with you on the 68 1/2 428CJ.. I also agree on the 68 GT/CS 390 4/speed... They're indeed very rare and have only ever seen one at one of our local car meets in the Pittsburgh region

Haters of the Mustang II often fail to realize, is that it saved the Mustang from extinction as a casualty of the Arab embargo crisis of the mid-late 1970's.. Needless to say, it was the right car at the right time!

I sure do remember, and if it weren't for the Mustang community sending a clear message to Ford against replacing the Mustang with the Probe? It would had become reality... However IMO the Mustang and Probe could had co-existed together, as the Probe really wasn't a poorly designed car for those seeking a FWD alternative to the Mustang.. Fast-forward some 30 years later, Ford designs the Mach-E SUV Crossover and does the unthinkable by placing it onto the Mustang nameplate.. Go figure
Kind of Like the Mercury Cougar which was a Mustang Sister then a Thunderbird Sister and the Worst the Last Cougar! PEW~ I had 4 or 5 67-68 Cougars Back in the Day! In fact my First Car was a 68 Cougar! Still have a 73 Vert!
And No I don't dig the Mach E Badge! But Heh I'm a Dinosaur!
C'mon Folks Gotta be Some Good Mustang Stories! Out there!

I agree with you guys. Love the 67-69 Cars! Always partial to the '67. Had one and loved it, but as to looks those three years are hard to beat. Yes our S197 have styling cues that are influenced by the first gen.

The Cougar however, was never intended as a replacement for the Mustang, where as the Probe at first was.. The Cougar first began as Mercury's upscale sibling to the Mustang, then later evolved and became a sibling to the Thunderbird.. The last Cougar that Mercury resurrected prior to its demise was nothing more than an upscale/re-badged Ford Escort ZX-2 IMO... 1998-2003 Ford Escort ZX-2 Sport
