In need of some stang lovers advice
l have06 4.0 mustang i originally was planning to drop in a 5.0 . but ive been hearing how you can improve the 4.0 , Now im torn between the two

Is your 4.0 a stick or auto? Maybe a rear gear change will be a good start for the 4.0...like 3:50's. I found a 4.0 06' Mustang w/auto and it runs very strong. So a gear change will be my first consideration. It has a K&N replacement filter and a dual cat back system and it really doesn't sound that bad. It has stock mufflers and its pretty quiet.

I would suggest either investing in the V6 to get it how you want it without an engine swap, or go find a clean 5.0 and make it your own. I hear too many times of those who do a swap regretting it and wishing they had just bit the bullet and found a comparable car with the right starting point. Takes a wad of cash to do it right! Now if this were an older model that was tougher to find the swap might make sense. But the S197s are pretty plentiful, prices have dropped to a reasonable $. Many have been babied and are in great shape. Look around and I will bet you can find a nice V8 model all ready to roll pretty quickly. Tough decision, good luck!

Thanks for all the input, I'm pretty much finished working on the exterior and am satisfied with the way she looks.
I'm thinking about looking for scrap vehicles of the same year to swap out that V8 with my current 4.0. But my ultimate goal is to have a "sleeper" and would like to keep my 4.0 but need suggestions on tweaking it for more horsepower if that is possible. I want something different yet want to keep it as original as possible. I will post pics soon 😎 |
It is a nice looking car, but you would be money ahead to sell it and buy a 5.0 over swapping it out. There is more to a GT than just the engine. The suspension is tuned for the heavier weight of the V8.. The GT has different springs, sway bars, etc. If you have a sentimental attachment to the car than money is less of a consideration. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Must Be Nice to Live in a State that would even let you do that. It's Hard enough to get a stock car to pass emissions here in California. we still have to smog 1975 Up. On the Early cars they don't care if it works it just has to be on the car. what a joke.
But even if its legal where you are that swap would be a can of worms. 35+ Years at Ford Dealerships in parts and I shudder at the thought of getting a 5.0 to have everything work correctly . Nice ride. Its hard to make any decision when it comes to any car. Based on your wants and needs, is it for work(daily driver),pleasure(weekend car). There is much to consider. Depending where you live,high country,plains,coast or city. I live in Colorado and when it snows Mustangs do handle or move on icy roads. So I have a daily driver (PT Cruiser) to rack up all those miles and with a set of studded snows it gets around very well. I can wait to drive the Mustang when the roads are good.
I understand about fast cars and appreciate a strong torque monster. I flip a lot of cars and working my way into a 96-04 Cobra. It may take a year or so but it will happen. Plus I'm saving enough to match the profits I earn. I'm on a budget so I watch every penny because I feel I'm on my last performance car. Getting very close to retirement plus I've had several severe health issues that get in the way of owning a fun car. If and when tI get my Cobra a nephew of mine will get the Laser red v-6 for his first car. Be patient and you can achieve getting what you want for the long haul. Time is your friend. |
