I'm wondering if anybody else has heard about this, and what ya all think?

On June 21st, Scaled Composites will launch their privately built spaceship, SpaceShipOne, from its launch plane, White Knight, into space. This will be the first civilian craft to ever enter space...

Here's a pic of SS1. SpaceShipOne is actually just the small craft attached to the belly of White Knight.

Here's a few more pics...

edit: Scaled has updated the site, so these pics are new, too...

Very nice looking bird, but I ain't riding in it. Ever.

That's assuming they have a successful flight. I'm not saying they won't but there's always that chance.

This is the first I've heard of it, but that's pretty cool if they do make to and back.

Space flight is so iffy. There are way too many uncontrollable variables. I really hope they are sucessful, as it would be pretty cool to have something positive in the news for once.

Yeah, next thing you know they'll launch a dog with a rocket on it's back.

From the BBC:

The pilot, 62-year-old Scaled Composites vice-president Mike Melvill, stamped his name in the record books as the first non-government-funded pilot to fly a spaceship out of Earth's atmosphere.

Poll added!

I also read that the rocketship has a hybrid rocket motor that uses NOS! I wonder if the pilot hits a "Go Baby Go" button. :nice:

It actually says, "Punch It!"

MustangMan311 6/21/04 11:49 AM

i'd never step foot in that thing. i might take the giant NOS bottle and strap it to my 'Stang but no way am I going ANYWHERE in that thing

Moosetang 6/21/04 11:59 AM

Burns tire rubber and Luaghing gas (aka NOS) for fuel. Its like a flying recycling center!

Go BABY GO!

Horsepower844182 6/21/04 01:55 PM

Would I fly in a private spaceship...as of now, No way. But maybe latter on as more and more people do it I might consider it.

(I don't really have to worry about it anyway, no way am I going to be able to afford one :-D )

FrankBullitt05 6/21/04 05:48 PM

Ya know I just thought of something...

SpaceShipOne burns rubber and Nitrous... :drive:

I knew there was a deeper reason why I liked this thing :jester:

StangII 6/22/04 07:36 AM

Who wants to live forever. I would love to see the earth from orbit. I dont think my stang quite has enough thrust to break free from the Earths gravity so YES i would ride in a heartbeat.
