Made the move from pictures of water drops to pictures of smoke. Problem with smoke is having to air out the room every 5 minutes

Glenn,
From what I could find online most people pick those models up as "throw-away" lenses meaning they take them to a sporting event or a vacation and don't worry if the lens gets damaged. Neither of them are IS and typically you will know as soon as you see the price if it is IS or not.

I have the very same problem, but it has nothing to do with smoke.

Those water drop images are fantastic. Mind if I ask how the heck you were able to get them?

A lot of patience and wasted time There are several ways to take the shots but here are the basic requirements for a steady shot:

Tripod
Remote trigger for the camera
macro lens (stabilization turned off)
Flash with wireless capability
Some sort of plastic or glass container
water dropper (using either syringe, IV dropper, bottle with a small hole in the cap, etc etc)

Fill the container with water and start making your drops. Focus in where they hit the surface. Then take a pic. Look at the detail in the pic and adjust your focus accordingly. I won't lie. For every good shot I have, I delete about a dozen.

Sweet! Thanks for the info. The lighting you used really puts it over the top.

I haven't been around too much lately, so I thought I'd get a few recent pics in this thread. These are all from this past weekend. I decided to roll the dice and do the opposite of what every Weatherman™ said I should do (which is stay inside out of the rain) and went camping. It did rain on me, but it was a light to moderate sprinkle for maybe 30 minutes Saturday afternoon. Hardly enough to notice. Glad I decided to stick and stay though. Had the place all to myself and it was awesome.

The view southwest, from the shoreline at my campsite:

Same view, from the water's edge:

Looking west, across the lake, just after sunset on Friday:

A few views from Saturday of the cliffs along the shore, a ways south of my site:

From Saturday evening, off the beaten path to the north as the stormy skies were clearing:

And one last parting shot, just before sunrise Sunday morning:
