She's a Cat 4 now. Has a chance of going back to Cat 5, but more of chance will weaken to a Cat 3.

I dunno...I can't help but think there's too much panic after Katrina. Ya, the storm surge was bad, but if it wasn't for the levees breaking in New Orleans, would there be as big of a fuss? We had two Cat 4s hit Florida last year, and not near this much evacuation.

I have not talked to or heard from any of our friend who lived in LA. The ones near the water. I hope it is just because they have no electric. My brother inlaw left yesturday to releave some of the Electrical workers down there. I hate the thought that it may happen again. I am happy this storm they are heeding the warnings. Just pray for the best.
I just had to use the bunny. I have a bunny myself. I hate to think how many of them passed in Katrinia. Where were going to run. Those poor little legs.

hmmm, let me think. Risk staying there or get out of dodge. I think we have seen enough damage done to know that it is a good idea to get out while you can. Hopefully the storm weakens a lot before it hits.

It's not just the storm surge---it's the impact of Cat 3 or Cat 4 winds. In Jefferson Parish we were a good 50 miles west of the eye of Katrina, and you wouldn't believe the wind damage (see below for one small sample).

In St. Bernard Parish (County to most of you), east of N.O., the entire parish flooded---every business was not just damaged, but destroyed in the flooding primarily from the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet and the storm surge up from the Gulf, not from the Industrial Canal levee breech.

Waveland, Pass Christian & Bay St. Louis were wiped clean far inland. Not even debris, just clean slabs. Storm surge was 20 feet high several miles inland.

They should heed the warning and the lessons from Katrina to get out of harm's way. You don't mess with a storm of this intensity---no brainer.

I'm from Lafayette, and we boarded up yesterday and left. We went east on US 90 to the Thibodaux area, just south of NOLA. I hoping that by getting behind the storm, we're better off. At this time(9:00am), we're getting rain and gusty wind for a few minutes as the rain bands swing by, and then calm for a while.

Mike, are you still in Erath(thats pronounced "EE-Rat" for you yankees) ?

Eric--no, we left Erath on Wednesday 9/14/05 and returned to our home in Metairie, which was not flooded or damaged. I have made two trips back to Erath--on Saturday to retrieve the rest of my stuff from my cousin's, and on Wednesday to retrieve my parents and get them back home.

Now Rita today. This is unprecedented, incredible.

Stay safe in Thibodeaux. According to weather radar this morning you guys looked like you were getting pounded with rain.

We are all under a tornado watch from TX to Mobile until at least 6 p.m. tonight.

Stay dry and safe.

If you guys look at my profile, you'll see I'm from the Beaumont area. When Rita made a turn to the north Thursday morning, I packed up my daughter, my girlfriend, and our dogs and headed up into east Texas to meet up with my Dad and Stepmom and my stepbrother and his family. My Dad has a motorhome so we planned on staying with them and then heading back home. Before we got to the campground, my Dad callled me on my cell to tell me that they were evacuating the county where we were heading! :bang: We finally met up with them (my stepbrother went on ahead to find another campground) along the road. We got to the new campground in northeast Texas and they told us we could only stay one night because they expected the storm to come up through NE Texas and the campground was in the path. :bang: We stayed one night and realized the motorhome wasn't big enough for all of us, especially if we had to be gone for several days. So while the rest of my family headed for another campground west of Dallas, we headed north into Oklahoma where we ended up in hotel in Norman, OK. One of the brothers and my oldest and best friend both stayed behind and luckily weathered the storm. My best friend was able to make it to my house today and called to let me know I'll need a new fence and few shingles, but otherwise the house was in good shape. Other people haven't been so lucky so please keep them in your prayers. We're going to stay here in OK a few more days and then try to head home. I'm concerned about the lack gas and heavy traffic so I'm in no hurry now that I know my family and house are all OK. One thing I heard from both my brother and my friend was that they will NEVER ride out another hurricane again!

He problably did. There's a house in my neighborhood where the owner had the lot built up high for the reason of avoiding floodwater.

See that brown ring around the house? That's the debris line, indicating how high the water got, how close it came to the guy's house. The water had begun to recede away from the house when the photo was taken.

One very wise, and very lucky, homeowner.
