It was 1969 and I was driving my 1960 Ford Fairlane west toward Seattle over Snoqualmie Pass. Since it was almost midnight I stopped for a cup of takeout coffee. Mind you, this was before the Mickey D lawsuit fiasco and it came without a cover. No big deal. I had done this many times before, so I nestled the cup between my legs and got back on the road. Hey, I was an ace driver, right?
I had driven perhaps two miles before the throttle cable broke and the car began to accelerate going downhill. Not good. In those days you could turn off the ignition while the car was in gear which I ultimately managed to do. Some bailing wire and a pair of pliers got me to Seattle.
Oh, the coffee? You know where it spilled. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!
There's really no point to this, except that Notre Dame destroyed my Huskies today, and I wanted to share the pain.

Most cars here still do not have cup holders (as it's illegal to eat or drink when driving!)
The only mainstream cars with cup holders are all the American origin ones, Chryslers, Jeeps, Ford SUV's etc etc.
I still have my can of coke on the way to work....

Wow . . I didn't know is was against the law to eat OR drink in England. Does one just receive a fine to pay, or do you have to go to traffic court as well?
Maybe you need one of these?

Normally they will issue you with a fine, but if the police think it affected your driving, you get 3 points and a big fine for "Driving without due care and attention". It is the same thing they are getting people for if they use their cell phone whilst driving.....

What I really don't like on Mustangs (other than they don't have T-Top) is that there is space for only 1 cup. There is space for other cup, but if you put that other cup, there is no way that you can shift 2nd and 4th gears (I'm talking about regular size cup from McDonalds).
My Intrepid, on the other hand, have space for 2 cups, and what I really like is when I don't need cup holders I can just put them away. Too bad Dodge don't produce Intrepid anymore (now there is Magnum).

Forget a cupholder.......
My olds didn't come with an ashtray.........BUT IT CAME WITH A DATAPORT! And the piddly cupholder only holds 20 ounce coke bottles.
You gotta have BOTH to drive happily- There are a couple towns here where the man will get ya if you get caught throwing a butt out the window.
We could all be unfortunate and drive 500s- they have cupholders in the doors.

One would think its more amusing to shift in traffic. Give you something to do while you are sitting in a rolling parking lot.
When I get stuck in a jam I got nothing to do but curse whoever caused it.

True. But driving for 4 1/2 hours through LA On a hot Fridayafternoon wasn't a whole lot of fun. A trip to see my brother, which normally took a little over 2 1/2 hours, took almost 7.
Even my runs from Carlsbad to San Diego. which is only about a 30 mile jaunt, frequently took an hour and a half.
Thanks, but I'll stick with my auto, until they put a 5 speed manumatic option in the Mustang. It will happen!
Oh, and my old car, which started this thread, was a three on the tree. Not that it matters.
