Uncovered! Hyundai Genesis Coupe = Mustang Competition

What was thought to be the Tibouron is the Genesis Coupe. Scooped at a media event undisguised.
Looking closer you see our fellow pony sitting next to this newcomer.

I don't think of anything as competition unless it's 280+ HP and rear wheel drive. Any specs?

codeman94 11/8/07 08:43 AM

ok.....its exactly the same color....and whats the deal with the badge on the stang?

Boomer 11/8/07 09:06 AM

Apart from the images, the poster also added several details about Hyundai’s new rear-wheel-drive coupe that were revealed at the presentation. According to the guy that attended the presentation, the new Coupe will be offered with two engine options, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder unit producing 215 Hp and a 300 Hp strong 3.8-liter V6 unit. Initial prices were said to start at $19,900 (€13,500) for the 2.0L and $25,900 (€17,500) for the V6 model.

Its not a badge is a side marker light. It's the Korean market spec stang.

Plus they have a new V8 sedan coming out, probably wouldn't be too hard for them to put that in the car for the US market.

Knight 11/8/07 10:03 AM

Man, it seems every automaker has a reticle aimed straight at the mustang.

AnotherMustangMan 11/8/07 10:33 AM

Wow, I really wanted to like that car...when they finally got the drivetrain right, why did Hyundai choose to make it so ****ably ugly? Also, if those price estimates are correct, this thing barely undercuts the 'Stang...what gives Hyundai? You're a tier 2 automaker, you have to give us the same amount of car for less money.

Not that bad looking a car. Curious as to what the interior will look like. I'd guess it to be compition for the Accord Coupe more than the Mustang.

cheech6g 11/8/07 10:50 AM

I like from what I can see....except for that dip in the rear side window. Dont know, maybe it would look better if it just followed that front window line. And call me crazy, but at first glance the back KIND OF reminded me of the XK.

jsaylor 11/8/07 11:22 AM

Hmm, like Another Mustang Man this isn't as well executed as I initially believed that it would be. The appearance is okay at best with the car looking like a rehashed G35 that is a good bit worse for having gone through the makeover. And the engine offerings aren't as well thought out as I had hoped for by any means, particularly since the car is a bit bigger than I expected this car to be.

AnotherMustangMan 11/8/07 11:29 AM

All the profile "texturing" they did to distract us from the fact that its an RSX/G amalgam is what bothers me. For examples, the two non converging "character" lines and the stupid window dip? Pick one line and the window dip, or both lines and no window dip, or no lines and just the window dip..or whatever (if you must have any of them at all), but all three is just cluttered. Regardless, the interior is nice, I've seen a few spy shots and it looks very modern/well layed out/ and high quality.

In sum, if I were thinking of buying a G35 (a car I love), I might cross shop with this Genesis. But if I were trying to decide between a G, this new Genesis, or a 'Stang GT...as a young guy, the choice would be clear. The new Hyundai will be popular among highschool girls, the G among the 30 and up crowd, and the Mustang among everyone.

Vermillion06 11/8/07 11:35 AM

What the heck is up with the bizzare quarter window shape? It looks wierd. The side sculpturing reminds me of the the late model Celica.
Everybody's gunning for the Mustang these days... Chevy, Chrysler, Nissan (Altima Coupe) now Hyundai....

To each their own gang. My four adult children are have discussed just whom shall be able to aquire Dad's 2007 GT/CS Stang some day in the future, after yours truely has left for the big Route-66 in the sky! No first year car is going to compete w/ the heritage and personality of a muscle car that is an American icon.

If we were talking about a new Z car or Skyline, then sure, but not this Hyundai.

You sure? It seems like every logo and emblem are covered up (see the center caps) and there also seems to be something on the rear faux gas cap medallion too. I was thinking this was one of those "blind surveys" where auto companies take cars and cover up their badges and see what people think they are. I guess I can be wrong, but it looks kinda weird without any markings.

Oh and about the price, $25,900 for a V6 coupe to start!! Are they out of their minds? Not much of a value IMHO.

instigator311 11/8/07 12:49 PM

It looks too similar to a Altima coupe or a G35/37. No point in comparing it to the current Mustang, the new one will be out soon enough.

Slims00ls1z28 11/8/07 01:10 PM

Its a Hyundai. Not a Honda or Nissan or Toyota. Hyundai and anything such as Mustang/Camaro/Vette or anything with a real following should not even be mentioned in the same sentence.
