How'd you like to pay by the mile?

From the link above: "Satellite toll plan to make drivers pay by the mile: British motorists face paying a new charge for every mile they drive in a revolutionary scheme to be introduced within two years."
Truly amazing. I think the U.S. government would have a hard time pulling off something that egregious here due to how ingrained the culture of the automobile is among Americans -- combined with the fact that we don't really have a nationwide gridlock problem. But it's quite frightening to even think of the possibility.
"Official research suggests national road pricing could increase the capacity of Britain's network by as much as 40 per cent at a stroke, he said."
Yeah...by pricing scads of people completely off the roads! That's really the way to fix your infrastructure problems; just keep people from even using it. (Sounds like my cable internet ISP, heh.)

My parents were in England for a couple of weeks last month, and they said it cost them near $120 to fill up the gas tank on their rented diesel Volkswagen...fortunately, it got such good mileage that they only have to fill it up four times in 2,000 miles.

Will never work here. Too much big brother, even for those that want more government. A national GPS tracker.
I believe there were several precints in the USA that wanted to have the information from GPS so that they could catch people speeding. It was quickly blocked.

I highly doubt it would be a national thing here, some of the larger metro areas may start to help promote the use of mass transit systems and reduce traffic.
