Grand prix whining noises

I have a 01 Grand Prix that is making whining noises when I turn the wheels left and right. Just starting to learn about cars so I'm not sure if its because its low on power steering fluid or what but its a distinct sound that something isn't right

Check the power steering fluid first and make sure its full, then we'll go from there.

Alright we'll I've filled the reservoir up to the cold line since it was lacking a little bit of fluid and took it for a little spin and still no improvement. What do I do next?

Sounds like the pump may be going bad. Or it could just be typical with those cars, the fox body Mustangs were bad about having a whine in them when turning when they got quite a few miles on them, but it was just the way they were. You might try some Lucas power steering treatment/stop leak, it might buy you some time.

Ok thanks for your help. What's the degree of difficulty on changing out the pump

Changing the pump itself is not difficult, take the belt off, a few bolts holding it on, and undo the lines, and you'll have to have the pulley pulled off the old one and pressed on to the new one.

However, where it is located on your particular car and how hard it is to get to those bolts and lines will determine how much of a pain in the *** it is. Some are easy, some are buried behind and under so much other **** that you might have to take half the **** off the front of the motor to get to them. Just depends on the car.
