That's right. NY is in New England.

Actually New England is only made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Mass., R.I., and CT.

But NY is part of the North East.

The problem with many of the regional names is that they overlap other regions and are often defined differently.

Virginia, for example, is considered part of the South, South East, Mid-Atlantic, south atlantic, East Coast and even the North East regions

I again think it is okay to put NY with the Northeast even though it is not in New England and it actually "called" a Mid-Atlantic state.

Agree with the VA and north to PA grouping and understand that NY
may have a better home in a "New England/NorthEast" region.
Also, wonder about NJ, is it better in NorthEast or Mid-Atlantic?

AFBLUE 6/22/07 11:59 AM

Maybe the area of NJ that is part of the NY City community/metro area would be in the NE, while the area of NJ that is part of the Philadephia commuity/metro area would be part of the Mid-Atlantic.

But in the end, I think it really just comes down to where people want to post. I watch the Mid-Atlantic and SE.

I have to agree with wiki and the census bureau. When I lived in NJ I always considered myself part of the north east. when I then lived in the Philly area I still considered myself part of the northeast. Now that I live in the DC area I consider myself mid-atlantic.
