No google cheats!! Guess the year this car ran at Indy and the driver. I was there with my father and all of nine years old! this bad boy rocked the racing world!! When racing was the real deal.... The car in my Avatar ran the next year!

I'll guess 65 or 67. They are the 3 turbines of Andy Ganditelles. Mario Andeitt, and i think Joe Leanard drove 2 of them. They all broke in the race because of a $1.50 bad bearing or something like that.

Need to see some pictures of the bigger Intercooler if you can, that might be my next upgrade. JDM is talking about a bigger pump and Intercooler on another forum, I'll wait to see what he comes up with. Also what do you think about relocating the Battery to the trunk to get a bigger Intercooler Res. tank????

Pretty good Darrell, your close! 1967 was year the number 40 car ran, its the 1967 Studebaker STP Turbine. It lead 171 laps, on lap 197 it had gear box problems 6.00 dollar part. It finished 6th that race, heres a pic take good look at who's sitting in number 40..This is also a good view of the side mounted Gas Turbine, was said to be a nightmare to keep on the track!

Hi Guys,
Well I finally made it back about 11:00. Had to make a trip to the wishy washy to get rid of that good ole' Indiana salt bath I took. I will post my results a little later. I'll give a hint...I ani't stopped smiling since 6:30 last night. I have had a terrible pain in my back since I left. I tried asperin, tylenol..nothing worked. I get back and read the last few pages and I figured out want the pain was. CODY....WILL YOU PLEASE REMOVE THAT KNIFE IN MY BACK? GEEZ!!

Hey Darrell I try to get more pix this weekend. Right now, I'm just enjoying the car... it is a MONSTER. Power is instant- full boost at basically anything above 2000 rpm.

The bigger heat exchanger is much like the big unit that came with the Paxton upgrade....here's a (bad) picture of the Paxton:

I don't think Studebaker sponser the car as they closed their doors here in South Bend in Dec. of 1963. It's still called Black Friday around here.

Southern Illinois Mustang Association 07-19-08 Show

Hi everyone --

Just wanted to let all of you know to mark your calendars for our car show. Our Mustang Club - Southern Illinois Mustang Association is holding our 31st Annual Mustang Round-Up Car Show and Swap Meet on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Robert's Ford Chrysler Jeep in Alton, Illinois. Robert's Ford Chrysler Jeep is located on the corner of Homer Adams Parkway and Alby Street in Alton, Illinois - just outside of St. Louis, MO.

Attached is the show flyer.

This is a judged show - Entry Fees are $20.00 for judged vehicle participants; $10.00 for display only vehicle participants; and $20.00 for swap meet vendors. Registration is from 8:00 am - 12:00 noon, with judging beginning at 12:00 noon.

There are 20 Mustang Classes, 2 All Ford Classes, 1 Falcon / Galaxie Class, 1 Thunderbird Class, and 1 Ford Truck class.

One of the Mustang Classes is for ages 16-20.

I hope all of you will be able to make it. I wasn't able to make it to the fall get together and would really like to meet everyone!

If you have any questions, you may contact anyone listed on the flyer including me.

Maybe I was too hasty to blame Cody solely for my back pain...maybe it was from a combination of Cody and riding with Tom yesterday. He had me pinned in the seat with the seat belt choking me about 12 times yesterday. That thing is a beast Tom!!!!!

Darrell Yep ! Studebaker did close in 1963 but the 1967 turbine car used a Studebaker chassis ! it was the easiest chassis to modify for the side mount turbine

1967 INDY Gas Turbine Car

Document ActionsThis 1967 Studebaker STP Special was built by Andy Granatelli. The side engine racer was driven by Parnelli Jones. In the 200 mile race (500 miles) at The Brickyard, Car #40 lead 171 laps. On the 197th lap, it suffered a gear box failure ($6.00 part) and eventually finished sixth. What might have been the impact on automobiles had the gas turbine-driven car actually won the race? You can see the racer in the museum in Indianapolis. The next year, "the powers that be" changed the rules to make the use of the gas turbine untenable in INDY car racing.

I was an 18 yr old applications Draftsman in 1967, working for Pratt & Whitney Turbo Power & Marine Group. This car was in our office for pre race engineering and evaluation. I worked on the motor mount drawing and sat in the car when no one was looking. This is a wonderful tribute.

Great numbers, after seeing your numbers I wish I had went just with the cams and not the other stuff. I was really hoping for a little more out of the t-body and the racer intake. Glad you made it home safe, felt like a real turd leaving you there. Next time dinner is on me.

Hey Ben,
The first thing that went thru my mind last night was " I don't want Ben to know". They may not help much when you are doing a N/A pull but I bet they are a really more of a benefit when you are on the juice! Brent says he sees a wide range in just how stock motors pull everyday.
