OK, this is comin outta left field, but I was just reading about an 03 Cobra that the owners were able to mod to get it to go past 200mph (on the Nevada Salt Flats).

Is this a matter for mostly horsepower, gear ratios, what?

I'm just curious

aerodynamics are often the limiting factor.

what he said...

the theoretical top speed of an 05 GT (manual) is 209 mph! (in 5th, at 6250 rpm, with stock rubber and gears). Of course you would need at least 500 hp at the rear wheels to get a 3500 lb car to go that fast....

I remember reading in HotRod about 2 guys who got a '68 Charger to go 190MPH. That is a feat in itelf considering the brick-like aerodynamics.

I personally think the '05 would need some kind of functional areodymanic modifications to the front end (and I don't mean an APC body kit).

Depending on how quick you want to go to 200mph, like the others have said do something about the aerodynamics, and put some real (numerically) low gears in it and you'd be getting pretty close.

You could always drop it out of a plane. Is that beyond terminal velocity?

Back in the day, they weren't really "bricks" .. they reached pretty fast speeds in NASCAR. (Chargers)

Skirt the front end to minimize the amount of air going under the car and add a boatload of nitrous. It would be ideal to hit it in 4th gear as well. (Add tire diameter, reduce gearing)

You'd probably get the two way average but the engine wouldn't like it for sustained periods. Bearing troubles.

JATO Rocket Packs like on Myth Busters!

For those too young to remember - look at a Boeing B-47, Jet Assisted Take Off

I've seen the rocket assisted take-off of a C-130. Pretty wild how fast they can get it going that way.

I believe they've had a couple 200mph Cobras run the Silver State Classic in the past.

A little too fast for my blood, especially after I saw pics of a couple cars that had blowouts at that kind of speed.

Speaking of Bonneville, anyone ever go? Looks like a lot of fun.

I remember seeing that 500hp turbo Hyabusa on Discovery ch go something like 212mph. Wonder what goes thru your mind at that kind of speed when you're on the back of a bike.

I have hit the governor several times in my car and I can you that the car was still pulling hard.

Even with drag on the car I could easily see the 05 hitting 165-170 without a problem.

The two main things are peak horsepower and aerodynamics. Weight and torque are rather insignificant in this sort of endeavor. 500+ rwhp is probably the opening bid for a Mustang to sit at the 200mph table.

Oh, and money, lots of money!

yeah.... just have to be careful gettin' her goin' that fast... I remember that's why the cops quit drivin' the 5.0s.... they generated too much lift in the rear at about 150, and they'd float off to the side.... well you can imagine what happened next.
my land speed record was over a buck 50 in my '88 GT.... it scared the outta me.... Then again... that was the old Fox chasis.... my '98 felt smooth as ice at 135.
I'd be all over functional aeros like the Roush wing.. and a different front fascia. I'm sure either Saleen, Roush or Steeda will do just fine.

200 MPH ? No Problem ..

I think there are more then a few Civic and Neon owners in my town that must be capable of at least 200..

(why else would you put a 3ft tall top fuel wing on your car?)

Everytime I see one of those wings, I just want to go rip it off and beat the owner with it

Easy Full body kit and drop a 429 Boss (with todays technology) in it with a supercharger. Anyone want to sponsor my GT?
