Transmission Tag number

Quick question,

Does anyone know if the Id number on the transmission correlates back to the VIN number or year or anything like that anywhere?

Thanks

Ryan

The tag on the transmission does not correlate to the VIN. The tag is applied at the transmission plant and is used for identification. The VIN is assigned at the car plant. One digit in the VIN identifies the type of transmission as in Auto or Manual but that is all.

Surprising, you mean there will be no number's matching cars. They always used to stamp the VINs on the drivetrain. I'm surprised they don't, at least for anti-theft / tracking purposes.

I remember seeing this thread several days ago and I just noticed that the workshop manual does in fact say that the sequence number of a VIN should be also on the block and on the transmission.

The last 6 VIN positions are the production
sequence number. This number is also used as the
vehicle serial and warranty number.
The serial number can also be found on the engine
block and transmission.
