I was rotating my tires today and noticed a hole in my tread.. Its about 1.5 inches long and 1 inch wide. I can see the belt underneath the hole.. The tread around it is literally falling off. Im so surprised to see this on a Pirelli.. I have no clue how this happened or how long its been like this. I rotate my tires every 4-5000 miles and they are running at the standard pressure. I called my dealer and they are going to check it out tomorrow and probably just give me a brand new one under im guessing the pirelli warranty. Im so glad I decided to rotate them today or I would have never noticed it. WHEW! Can you say blow out!? 17k miles and this.

Let me know if you guys have any idea why this happened.

Thanks

Looks kinda like you ran over something.

STANG_IT 9/7/05 06:37 PM

yup, something very sharp. If it turns out to be a defective tire, uh, can you let us know?

Is it just me or does the tire look pretty close to the wear level? How many miles are on your tires ?

gkaufman 9/7/05 08:15 PM

There are 17k miles on em... And I was under the impression that the wear indicator was in the center of the tires not on the outsides.

Trampus 9/7/05 08:32 PM

That doesn't look like a defective tire to me, just severe road damage.

Nope, you are pretty much at the wear indicators already. Have to agree that looking at that pic it is not a defective tire. Looks like the tire hit something.

gkaufman 9/8/05 09:42 AM

so you are telling me that these pirellis only get about 20k miles out of em? Thats mostly highway miles.. Incredible if correct.

adrenalin 9/8/05 09:44 AM

that all depends on how you drive. When I got my 97 I did a huge burnout the same night. I had to buy new tires the next day. Didn't even have 50 miles on the car yet.

Boomer 9/8/05 09:45 AM

Sport/soft rubber + hard/aggressive driving = bald tires

Fastrack 9/8/05 09:48 AM

I'm still running the factory tires on mine :-D

Now maybe that's because I only have 2800km's  :D

gkaufman 9/8/05 10:56 AM

I believe the actual tread wear indicator is in the center of the tire not where you all believe it is. Its a rib located in the center most section.. They would not put a wear indicator on the outside edge. And I drive hard sometimes I havent done any burnouts nor been to a drag strip with my car so I dont think these tires are anywhere near bald yet.

WERKED 66 9/8/05 11:10 AM

i have to agree with everyone else.... they look worn...in fact they lock as if they did not wear evenly.....other spots worn more then others....

WERKED 66 9/8/05 11:11 AM

also was that a front or a rear tire before you rotated them... looks as if you have to much camber...that would cause something like that...

gkaufman 9/8/05 11:22 AM

it was a rear tire but i rotate every 4000 miles. And Im not sure how you can blame camber based on the picture. Camber problem would be one side more worn than other. Which is not the case.. I think the picture is deceiving you guys.

lodom 9/8/05 12:16 PM

I also think the source of the problem was something you ran over, not a defect in the tire. The treadwear appears to be the result of someone who is enjoying driving their car. I wouldn't expect the factory tires to last very long. If they were like the Goodyear V-rated tires I've owned in the past, they wouldn't even look that good.

mikeelia 9/8/05 03:27 PM

Just my opinion: Doesn't look like a warranty issue. It would great if they do it for you, but you'd at least better buy a new one for the other side so they match height-wise...

I'm at 11k and mine don't look quite as worn as this...

it wont be covered under any warranty.. whatever, but im not buying 2 of em.. Ill just leave the new one on the front end for a while and burn it up on some high speed turns haha. However, The parts for the other two tsbs have been ordered and I should be fixed up next week. Apparently I get a new tranny and of course the struts get fixed finally.

The wear indicator is in the main treads, don't see one visible in that picture.

But your edge wear does look a little uneven. Could be the pic.

PolkThug 9/9/05 03:45 PM

I've been through a lot of tires in my days and that is definitely not normal (also used to make them at Goodyear). The defect was probably not very noticeable at first. I'm guessing a piece of debris got into the rubber before the molding process creating a small pocket which was then exposed after the tire wore down a little. It should be replaced under warranty.
