http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ges/spacer.gifMobil 1 Limited Availabilityhttp://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ges/spacer.gifWe regret the limited availability of Mobil 1 motor oil. Due to the impact of Hurricane Ike on our raw material suppliers, we are experiencing limited availability of Mobil 1 motor oils. We appreciate your loyalty to the Mobil 1 brand and the trust you have placed in our products. We are working quickly to have your choice of Mobil 1 motor oils available at normal levels as soon as possible. Thank you for you patience.

Our local Walmarts are much lower on stock than normal, but still have some of most of the varieties in stock in the 5 qt and 1 qt containers. They have jacked up the prices though, presumably because supply is running low.

Good thing I have 7 quarts in the garage. And I can always order Amsoil.

The Reverend 11/9/08 03:47 PM

I am considering switching to amsoil, I want to wait until the warranty is up, might have to switch early.

I stopped using Mobil 1 after a few people discovered Group III basestock in certain Mobil 1 products (which are supposed to use Group IV). I now use Pennzoil Platinum / Quaker State Q Synth which is available all the time at $4/qt. Amway oil is too expensive.

Hatchman 11/9/08 03:58 PM

Yep, can't go wrong with Amsoil, good stuff. Not trying to start the "which oil is better" debate, but heck, if you can't find one of them, makes the choice easy. :)

Not the original Mobil 1.
That situation is in some of the oil that they sell under other names such as the Mobil 1 Clean 5000/7500 Which are just a regular motor oil.

Nope, it was before they played games with the marketing. It should have been a Group IV basestock but they found Group III through GC testing. I just don't see the value in paying more than $4/qt for Group III or Group IV synthetic engine oils considering GM allows up to 8000-9000 miles for semi-synthetic 5W-20 if you follow the oil life "monitor". Audi and BMW specify 10k mile oil change intervals for their synthetic oils (no time was specified). I just change it every year or 6k miles, whichever comes first. Usually the year comes up before I even reach 4000 miles on any of my cars.

LAK3RS 11/11/08 03:08 PM

Yup, due to the hurricane they got screwed, and were already extremely low on the oil. It just set them back quite a bit. There won't be any available until the beginning of 09, but for now I went to some Royal Purple I found at $6.00 bucks a quart!

Indystang 11/13/08 03:18 AM

Yes I noticed it too and I went with Valvoline synthetic this time. $18 for the 5 qt. container not a bad deal.

Boltzman 11/13/08 07:09 PM

just got oil changed on Sat with mobil 1:dunno:

Kind of off topic, but do you have to do anything special when switching from traditional oil to Mobile 1?

GrnT 11/13/08 07:12 PM

Mobil 1 is what I used. :nice:

no. Just use synthtic for the life of the car . Not a must but i wouldn't switchback to regular oil after synthetic

Autotooner 11/13/08 07:22 PM

my store must not sell much Mobil 1, cause our supply is fine...

TampaBear67 11/13/08 07:30 PM

All I've ever used in my 97 T-Bird, 4.6, is Motorcraft 5w-30 Semi Synthetic, and a Motorcraft Filter every 3000 miles. I can usually pick up 5 quarts and a filter for less than $15 at Wal Mart. I've never had a problem in almost 100,000 miles, and my T-Bird has almost 175,000 miles on it now too.

Boltzman 11/13/08 08:10 PM

the only things I hate about changing my own oil is getting rid if it and the mess

No, although some people recommend making your first change after synthetic be sooner than normal because synthetic can clean things out a little. I've changed cars from dino oil to synthetic at all different mileages, from as little as 1000 miles to over 200,000 miles. I've switched at least half a dozen cars to synthetic (Mobil 1) with over 100k miles, including my '89 5.0 Mustang. In every case, if the car leaked or burned oil, the rate of oil consumption went up by a small percentage after I switched. In no case did oil leaks or oil burning start when none existed before.
