Extra key
Hey. I'm getting a spare key made for lockout emergencies. Does it need a chip to unlock the door? And if not. will the car alarm sound until the real key is placed in the ignition? I know. I know. I should have a chipped key made just in case I lose the good one. lol I'm just kinda curious since I got a crazy price quoted me for having a transponder key made. 0_o :P

I have a feeling the best way to solve this is to pay the dealer whatever they quoted you, because otherwise it likely will turn into a huge hassle and soak up a lot of time to figure out.

On my 05 with the passive system, which has no alarm, you can unlock the door with a key that has no chip. If you have the system that actually has an alarm, which was an extra option, I'm not sure.

Check with some of your local Hardware Stores, ex. Ace, True Value. Not Lowes or Home Depot. My local True Value made one for me at half the price of the dealer, and it works just fine.

Well it can't cost much to cut a standard, non-chip key, so that's be the best way to find out for sure what the alarm will do.
But if I had to guess, the chip has nothing to do with unlocking the door so the alarm won't care. It's just like if the fob had unlocked it.
Another alternative...get a "switchblade" style key/fob. It's been a while, so I'd have to look it up to be sure how much I spent on mine. But $35 seems to be coming to mind. I have 2 active keys, so I could program it myself. And my local dealership cut the key for free. So there's that option too...
