2005-2009 Ford Mustang Interior door panel insert fix
Got tired of fixing the vinyl door insert multiple times using every method I could find online only to have it start falling off again a few months later so I decided to start over. Stripped the door bare and picked up some new material (graphite suede/microfiber type material). Used a 3m spray adhesive recommended by the auto upholstery shop and covered the door. Didn't come out perfect but I'm happy with it
So am I right in guessing you laid the material on, and then used a long thin razor to cut the edges as needed, on the outside groove and the bits on the armrest and such?
I am seriously considering replacing mine as well to match the dash vinyl I did, and am curious how you did these problem areas.
Sprayed door and material with adhesive then applied the material to the door. Then used a screen tool to run the material into the outer channel. Razor blade to trim. Left maybe 1/4-1/2 inch material on inside edges and tucked it in. The material tightens up in the heat so i recommend trimming on the outside edge of the channel and use screen tool to tuck it in.
This was my first shot at upholstery work from scratch, and looks like shop work to me so I don't think its an overly difficult task.
I am having the same problem with my 2006 GT. I just had some work done on the car, and they insisted I needed two whole new door panels because if I just replaced that leather, it would keep falling off. So, what type of adhesive did you use? It looks great. I have grey interior, and I'm having trouble finding grey.
it's been a while but if I remember correctly I went to an auto upholstery shop and bought headliner material and used the recommended spray adhesive. I think it was 3m. I never had an issue after fixing it......albeit I no longer have the car.
I think the trick is to get new material....with the foam backing and make sure to clean the door panel really well
Don't just buy new panels. It wouldn't surprise me if they start falling again in a few years on the new panels.
It's not hard to fix, and it's definitely something you can do yourself. Many have used the 3M spray adhesive. I used a 3M interior trim adhesive in a tube, and it's held just fine for several years now. I think I recall both types of adhesive being readily available at Wal-Mart.
Make sure you let the Weldwood dry sufficiently before putting the insert back on. It took me about an hour and a half to do both doors and they now look like new!
